1) Does the SDC MC-7 door position sensor mount into the door edge, or on the surface of the frame?
The MC-7 is a recessed sensor. The switch goes into the frame and the magnet into the matching bore in the door edge, so nothing is visible with the door closed. That flush mount is the reason to pick it over a surface contact: there is nothing exposed to pry at, snap off, or catch on a cart in a busy corridor. The tradeoff is prep. You have to drill both the frame and the door edge in alignment, which is straightforward on a new opening or a door already off its hinges, and more work as a retrofit on a hung door. If you cannot drill the opening, a surface mount contact is the right call instead.
2) What does biased mean on a high security magnetic door contact like the SDC MC-7?
A biased contact is built to resist being defeated with an outside magnet. A plain reed switch only knows magnet or no magnet, so someone holding a strong magnet against the frame can hold the circuit in the closed state and walk the door open without the panel ever seeing it. A biased switch is tuned to one specific magnetic field, and an added or shifted field pushes it out of that window and trips it. That is what the MC-7's biased high security design buys you, and it is the reason this style is specified on doors where the contact itself is part of the threat model, such as secure storage, records rooms, and controlled access points in healthcare and government buildings.
3) Is the SDC MC-7 contact normally open or normally closed?
Both, because it is SPDT. Single pole double throw gives you a common, a normally open, and a normally closed leg off the one switch, so you wire whichever the panel wants without ordering a different part. Most alarm and access control inputs run a normally closed supervised loop, and a door status input on a controller or an elevator or HVAC interlock often wants the opposite. One MC-7 covers either. 4) Will an SDC MC-7 door contact work on a 12V or 24V access control system?
Yes. The MC-7 is a 30VDC device, and 30VDC is the ceiling on what you may switch through it, not a supply it needs. The 12VDC and 24VDC low current door status inputs on standard commercial access control panels and alarm boards sit well under that. What it will not do is switch a line voltage load, and it is not a relay for a lock: run the contact to a monitoring input and let the panel or a separate relay handle any power the door hardware draws.
5) Can the SDC MC-7 be used as a request to exit device?
No. The MC-7 reports door position only, open or closed. It cannot tell the panel that somebody intended to leave, so it will not shunt an alarm or release a lock on egress by itself. What it does is the other half of that job: pair it with an SDC exit switch or sensor and the panel gets both signals, the request to exit from the switch and the actual door state from the MC-7. That combination is what lets a system distinguish a legitimate exit from a door forced open or propped, which is the whole point of monitoring in the first place.
6) Is the SDC MC-7 magnetic contact rated for commercial door traffic or is it a residential alarm contact?
