1) Does the Securitron MK keyswitch come with a mortise cylinder, or do I have to supply my own?
No cylinder is included with the MK keyswitch. The backing bracket accepts any 1-1/8 inch (28mm) or 1-1/4 inch (32mm) mortise cylinder, and the switch supports cylinders from 1-1/8 inch to 1-1/2 inch. Securitron sells the cylinder separately as the MKC, or the MKC-KA if you need it keyed alike with other openings. The MKC is 1-1/8 inch length, 26D finish, SC keyway, and ships with 2 keys.
2) What is the difference between the momentary and alternate action MK keyswitches?
Momentary models (MK, MK2, MKN, MKN2, MKPZ) make the contact only while the key is turned and release when you let go. That is what you want for a release-on-key door strike or an egress release. Alternate action models (MKA, MKA2, MKAN, MKAN2, MKAPZ) latch: turn the key once to change state, turn again to change it back. Use alternate for arming an alarm panel, holding a mag lock off, or any lock-down or unlock-and-leave-it function.
3) Do I need SPDT or DPDT on a Securitron MK mortise cylinder keyswitch?
The MK keyswitch is offered both ways. SPDT is the base version and handles one circuit, which covers most single strike or mag lock releases. The DPDT models (the ones with a 2 in the part number, like MK2, MKA2, MKN2, MKAN2) switch two independent circuits from the same key turn, so you can release a lock and shunt an alarm zone or signal an access panel at the same time. Both use a 5 Amp rated plunger switch.
4) Which MK keyswitch fits a narrow aluminum storefront mullion?
The narrow versions, MKN and MKN2 momentary or MKAN and MKAN2 alternate. The rest of the MK line is single gang or double gang, which is sized for a standard electrical box in a wall, not for a narrow stile. If you are mounting to a glass front frame or a narrow mullion, order the N models. Double gang (MKPZ, MKAPZ) is the widest of the group and adds an audible.
5) Will the Securitron MK keyswitch work on a 12 volt access control system?
Yes, and on 24 volt as well. The MK keyswitch is rated 12/24VDC and the bi-color LED is standard at either voltage, so the same unit drops into a 12VDC strike circuit or a 24VDC mag lock circuit without a different part number. The LED gives you a lock state indication at the door.
6) How do I key a Securitron MK keyswitch to match the rest of my building?
The MK takes a standard mortise cylinder from 1-1/8 inch to 1-1/2 inch, so you can install a cylinder from the keyway and keying system already used on your other doors and the key ring does not grow. If you would rather buy it as a package, the MKC-KA is the Securitron mortise cylinder for the MK Series supplied keyed alike, and the plain MKC comes with 2 keys in SC keyway, 26D finish.
7) What can I use instead of a Securitron MK keyswitch if I also need a push plate on the same opening?
The MS Sedco 830 Series combination keyswitch and push plate switch for low voltage device activation puts both the key control and a push plate into one device, so a single opening gets keyed override and plate actuation from one unit. The Securitron MK is a keyswitch alone: it takes a separate mortise cylinder of 1-1/8 inch to 1-1/2 inch and drives electric lock control, alarm panel arming, reset and override through a 5 amp rated plunger switch. Choose by whether the opening needs a plate actuator alongside the key.
8) Can one key turn control two different functions on a Securitron keyswitch?
Yes. The MK backing bracket has an additional switch position, so a second switch can be mounted and activated by turning the key the opposite direction. One cylinder, two directions, two separate actions, for example unlock one way and lock down the other. That is separate from choosing a DPDT model, which doubles the circuits on a single direction of key turn.
9) Can I put a Securitron MK keyswitch outside in the weather?
Yes, with a weather enclosure. Securitron lists the WCC and WBB weather options as available for all single gang push buttons, keyswitches and keypads, so any of the single gang MK models can be ordered with one. The narrow and double gang MK models fall outside that single gang weather option, so plan on a single gang model for an exterior door.
10) What is the amp rating on the Securitron MK keyswitch, and can it switch a mag lock directly?
The MK uses a 5 Amp rated plunger switch. That is enough to carry the current of a typical low voltage lock circuit at 12 or 24VDC directly, rather than needing a relay in between for small loads. For anything drawing more than 5 amps, run it through a relay or contactor instead.
11) Is a Securitron MK keyswitch UL listed for commercial access control?
The MK keyswitch carries a UL Certificate of Compliance and is a commercial rated device. Beyond that, the specifics of the fire or life safety listing on the opening come from the lock and the door assembly, not the keyswitch.
12) Should I use a keyswitch or a push button for door release?
A keyswitch restricts who can operate the door, which is why you use one for alarm panel arming, lock down, override, or an exterior release where anyone could reach the button. A push button is for free egress or a receptionist release inside a controlled space, where restricting the operator is not the point. The MK adds the key requirement to an ordinary low voltage release circuit and gives you a bi-color LED to show state.
13) What are the alternatives to a Securitron MK keyswitch for low voltage door control?
