Securitron KP1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Securitron KP1 keyswitch come with a cylinder, or do I have to supply one?
The KP1 ships without a cylinder. It accepts any tubular cylinder from 1-1/8 inch to 1-1/2 inch, so you order the cylinder separately and key it into your own system. Two keys are included with the switch itself.
2) What is the difference between the Securitron KP1 and KP1A keyswitch?
Function, not hardware. The KP1 is momentary: turn the key and the contacts change state, then return. The KP1A is the alternate (maintained) version, where the key turn latches the contacts in the new state until you turn it back. Use momentary for a door release or an alarm reset pulse; use alternate when you need to hold a lock unlocked or keep a circuit armed. Both are single gang.
3) Can the KP1 keyswitch switch a maglock or electric strike directly, or do I need a relay?
The switch is a 7 amp rated SPDT contact, which is enough to carry most electric strikes and maglocks directly without an interposing relay. SPDT gives you both a normally open and a normally closed leg off one key turn, so you can break power to a fail-safe lock on one contact or signal an alarm panel on the other. Size against your lock's inrush and holding current.
4) Will the KP1 keyswitch fit a standard single gang electrical box?
Yes, both the KP1 and KP1A are single gang devices, so they mount to a standard single gang back box or mud ring. The face plate is stainless steel and anti-tamper screws are included, which is what you want on the unsecure side of an opening.
5) Can I mount a Securitron KP1 keyswitch outdoors or in an exterior wall?
Not as it comes. For exterior or wet locations, Securitron offers the WCC and WBB weather options, which cover all single gang push buttons, keyswitches and keypads including the KP1. Add the weather enclosure to the order if the switch is going on an exterior wall or an unprotected loading dock.
6) What voltage does the Securitron KP1 keyswitch LED run on?
The bi-color LED runs on 12 or 24VDC and draws 40mA at either voltage. That means it drops onto the same low-voltage supply feeding your access control panel or lock power supply with no separate transformer. The LED is a status indicator, wired independently of the SPDT contact.
7) Is the Securitron KP1 keyswitch suitable for a high-abuse entrance or high-traffic building?
It is a commercial-rated device, but Securitron positions the KP1 for less demanding applications. For a school entrance, a parking structure, or anywhere the switch sees constant use or deliberate abuse, step up to a heavier vandal-resistant keyswitch. The KP1 suits office suite doors, back-of-house doors, and alarm panel arming points where use is occasional.
8) Can I use a KP1 keyswitch to arm and reset my alarm panel?
That is one of its stated uses. The KP1 supports electric lock control plus alarm panel arming, reset and override. For arming, most integrators pick the KP1A alternate version so the contact holds the armed state; for a reset or override pulse the momentary KP1 is the right choice.
9) Can I key the KP1 keyswitch into the building master key system?
Yes, if your system uses tubular cylinders. The KP1 takes any tubular cylinder between 1-1/8 and 1-1/2 inches, so a locksmith can supply a cylinder cut to your existing tubular keyway and the switch works off the same keys as the rest of the openings. It does not accept a standard mortise or rim cylinder.
