Securitron M34R – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Securitron M34R work on a swinging door, or is it only for sliding doors?
Sliding doors only. The M34R Recessed Magnalock mortises into the edge of the door that meets the frame when the door closes, so the magnet and armature come together as the leaf slides shut. That geometry doesn't work on a swinging leaf, where the door face rotates away from the header. For a swing door you want a surface or concealed maglock built for a header mount, not the M34R.
2) Do I need to order a 12V or a 24V version of the M34R Magnalock?
Neither, it's one part number for both. The M34R runs automatic dual voltage at 12/24VDC with no jumper to set and no field adjustment. Current draw is 320mA at 12VDC and 170mA at 24VDC, so size your power supply off whichever rail you're feeding it from. On a long wire run, 24V is the easier one to hold up because the draw is roughly half.
3) What is the difference between the M34R, M34RB, M34RBD and M34RD?
Monitoring, and nothing else. M34R is the plain lock with no monitoring. M34RB adds BondSTAT, the magnetic bond sensor that tells your panel the magnet is actually holding the armature rather than just energized. M34RD adds a door position switch, which reports whether the door is closed. M34RBD carries both. Holding force, voltage, and the mortise prep are the same across all four, so pick on what your access control head end needs to see.
4) Does the recessed Magnalock hold the door locked when the power drops?
No. Like every electromagnetic lock, the M34R holds only while energized, so the door releases the instant power is removed, whether that's a fire alarm interface, an egress device, or a building outage. That's the failsafe behavior codes generally want on an egress path, but it means the M34R gives you no security during a power loss. If you need the opening to stay locked without power, you need a mechanical lock, not a maglock.
5) Should I order BondSTAT or just a door position switch on the recessed Magnalock?
They answer two different questions. A door position switch tells you the door is closed. BondSTAT is a magnetic bond sensor that confirms the magnet has actually locked onto the armature, which catches a door that is shut but not securely held, misaligned, or on a magnet that's lost bond. Alarm monitoring and anything audited usually wants BondSTAT. Simple traffic control on a closet or stock room is fine with position switch alone, or with no monitoring at all. Order M34RBD if you want both reported back.
6) Can a Securitron M34R be used on an exterior or unheated sliding door?
Yes. The M34R's electronics are fully sealed, which makes it tamper proof and weatherproof, and all ferrous metal surfaces are plated to MIL specification. Operating range is -40 to +140F [-40 to +60C], so an unheated warehouse, a patio slider, or a loading area is within spec. The finish is architectural brushed stainless steel, US32D/630.
7) Will the M34R stick or drag the slider after it releases?
No. A patented instant release circuit drops the field with no residual magnetism left in the armature, so the leaf is free the moment the relay opens. That matters more on a sliding door than a swinger, because an automatic slide operator will fight a magnet that's still tacky and you'll see the door hesitate at the start of every open cycle.
8) Can I use one M34R on a pair of sliding doors or a bi-parting automatic slider?
One M34R secures one leaf. Securitron specifies it for single sliding doors, and the magnet mortises into the single edge that meets the frame. A bi-parting automatic slider has two leaves meeting each other in the middle, so there is no frame edge for the second half to lock against, and you would need a lock strategy for each leaf. Confirm you're on a single-slide opening before you cut the prep.
9) Will the M34R Magnalock be visible on the door once it's installed?
No. The whole point of the recessed design is that the lock buries in the door edge that meets the frame, so with the door closed nothing shows on either face. Property managers putting access control on patio sliders, glass fronts, or a storefront interior get the control without a black box on the header. The exposed metal that is visible during service is architectural brushed stainless, US32D/630.
