Securitron M680E 628 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Securitron M680E maglock work on an outswing door?
Outswing is what the M680E is built around. The strike plate mounting template is set up for the easiest install on out-swing doors, with the magnet on the frame header and the armature on the door. The body measures 11-1/2"L x 2-9/16"D x 2-1/2" and the strike 10-7/8"L x 9/16"D x 2"H, and the housing is sized to clear a surface door closer, so you can mount it on an opening that already has one without fighting the closer arm.
2) Can I put a Securitron M680E magnetic lock on a 1 hour fire rated door?
Yes. The M680E EcoMag is UL 10C Fire Rated for 1 hour and conformant to CAN/ULC-S104 for fire doors, so it is listed for use on a rated opening. It is also UL 1034 Burglary-Resistant Listed, UL 294 Recognized Component, ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 2 (E18501), and California State Fire Marshal Listed. Note it is rated for indoor use only, +32 to +110F, so it is not a fire exit that sees weather.
3) How much holding force does the Securitron M680E magnalock have, and is that enough for a main entrance?
1200 lbs (544 kg) of holding force. That is the standard full-size maglock rating used on commercial perimeter and stairwell openings, and it is paired here with ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 2 and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listing. For an interior office or closet door where 1200 lbs is more than the opening needs, Securitron's M380E is the smaller EcoMag in the same family.
4) Does the Securitron M680E maglock run on 12V or 24V, and do I need to set a jumper?
Both, with nothing to set. The M680E is autosensing dual voltage at 12/24VDC using microprocessor controls, so the same lock drops onto either supply. Sizing your power supply: average draw is 113mA (+/-10%) at 12VDC or 52mA at 24VDC, with maximum draw of 515mA at 12VDC or 290mA at 24VDC. If you order the BDX with the integrated REX, add 25mA at 12VDC or 10mA at 24VDC, and run the REX from a separate continuous power input, it is not powered off the switched lock feed.
5) Do I still need a separate motion sensor for egress if I install a Securitron M680E?
Not if you order the BDX. The M680EBDX has the request to exit PIR built into the lock housing, covering the approach so the door unlocks as someone walks up, and the beam pattern is adjustable to suit the space. That removes the ceiling or wall mounted REX sensor and its separate wiring run. Two things to plan for: the REX needs its own continuous power input, and it adds 25mA at 12VDC or 10mA at 24VDC to your supply load. Order the plain M680E or the BD only if egress is being handled by another device.
6) Can a Securitron M680E maglock be mounted outside or in an unheated garage?
No. The M680E EcoMag is rated for indoor use only, with an operating temperature range of +32 to +110F (0 to +43C). An exterior gate, an unconditioned loading dock, or a parking structure entry that swings below freezing is outside that range and calls for an outdoor-rated maglock instead. On a covered interior vestibule door that stays within the range, it is fine.
7) I'm replacing an older Securitron M680 maglock. Will the M680E go back in the same place?
The M680E is the direct successor to the M680 series, carrying the same 1200 lb holding force and the same intelligence and finish range, with the energy consumption cut by up to 80 percent. The mounting has been updated, though: the EcoMag uses a revised strike plate mounting template as part of the faster bracket mount install, so plan on setting the strike to the new template rather than reusing the old holes. Body dimensions are 11-1/2"L x 2-9/16"D x 2-1/2" with a 10-7/8"L x 9/16"D x 2"H strike, so check those against the header space you have.
8) How do I know the M680E magnet is actually bonded to the armature and not just powered?
That is what BondSTAT is for, and it is the reason to order the BD or BDX rather than the plain M680E. BondSTAT is a sensor in the magnet face that reports true bond, not just coil current, so a door pushed slightly out of contact reads as unsecured instead of falsely secure. The onboard LED shows secure, open, or incomplete bond right at the lock, which is what you read off the ladder during setup. The BD and BDX also carry an integrated door position switch, and every model has a tamper switch that outputs an alarm if the cover comes off, selectable normally open or normally closed.
9) Is the Securitron M680E rated for commercial buildings or is it a residential lock?
Commercial. The M680E is a commercial-grade electromagnetic lock, ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 2 (E18501), UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and UL 294 recognized as an access control component, which is the listing set specifiers and AHJs look for on institutional and multi-family openings. It is a hardwired 12/24VDC device, not battery operated, so every opening needs a power run back to a supply.
10) Does the M680E have an environmental product declaration for a LEED or green building submittal?
It does. The M680E EcoMag carries a published Environmental Product Declaration and three Green Circle certifications (20-0024, 20-0025, 20-0026), and ships with a biodegradable packaging insert. Combined with the 80 percent cut in energy consumption over the previous M680 series, that is the documentation package a sustainability-driven spec or a green distributor is asked to produce.
11) What happens to a door held by an M680E magnalock if the power goes out?
It unlocks. An electromagnetic lock is fail-safe by physics, the magnet only holds while it is energized, so a power loss or a fire alarm release drops the door open. That is why maglocks are paired with a code-compliant egress release and why the M680E is listed under UL 10C for 1 hour and CAN/ULC-S104 on fire doors rather than acting as a fail-secure latch. If you need the opening to stay latched without power, a maglock is the wrong device for it.
12) Can I set a delay so the M680E relocks by itself after someone goes through?
Yes. The M680E has an adjustable automatic relock timer with a 0 to 30 second range set at the lock, so the magnet re-energizes on its own after a valid release without the panel having to time the output. Useful on openings where the access control unlock pulse is short or where you want a consistent hold-open window across a fleet of doors.
13) What finishes does the Securitron M680E come in, and can I get one to match dark bronze storefront?
Ten finishes are offered across all three models: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 628 aluminum anodized, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel, BSP black suede powder, WSP white suede powder, and 600 paintable primer gray. For dark bronze storefront, 613E is the match. If the opening is painted to a custom color, 600 is supplied in primer gray to be field painted. The finish choice is independent of the model, so any of the M680E, M680EBD, or M680EBDX can be had in it.
