This concealed Magnalock is ideal for traffic control or medium security and with its flexible mounting options solutions the most challenging door control situations. Securitron SAMN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Securitron SAM shear magnalock work on a pair of doors with no mullion?
Yes. The SAM has mounting options for a single door or for each leaf of a pair, so you order one unit per leaf. Because it is a concealed shear lock rather than a surface direct-hold mag, it mortises into the header, door edge or threshold and holds when the leaf closes into alignment, so there is nothing spanning the meeting stiles and no mullion required.
2) Can a shear magnalock be used on a sliding door or a swing-through door?
That is one of the main reasons to pick a shear lock over a surface mag. The SAM works on sliding, in-swing, out-swing and swing-through doors, and it can be mounted in any position on the door: top, side or bottom. A surface-mounted electromagnetic lock needs a swing direction it can face and an armature on the door face, which rules out swing-through and most sliders. The SAM mortises in and holds on a concealed shear plate instead.
3) How much room do I need to mortise in a Securitron SAM magnalock?
The lock body measures 1-3/16 inches by 1-1/2 inches in the stated height and width, so the pocket has to take that cross section in the header, edge or threshold. It goes into wood, steel or aluminum, which covers hollow metal frames and aluminum storefront alike. On aluminum, check your stile and header section will take that depth before you cut.
4) What is the difference between SAM, SAMB, SAMBD and SAMD?
They are the same 12/24VDC self-aligning shear lock with different monitoring. SAM has none. SAMB adds the BondSTAT magnetic bond sensor, which reports that the magnet is actually bonded to the strike, not just powered. SAMD adds a door position switch, which reports the door closed. SAMBD carries both. If your access control panel needs a genuine secured signal and not just a contact, take BondSTAT. If you only need door held/door open status at the head end, SAMD is enough. There is also a SAMN narrow shear lock for tighter sections.
5) Does the SAM magnalock need a 12V or a 24V power supply?
Either. It is automatic dual voltage with no field adjustment or jumper, so it takes 12VDC or 24VDC as wired. Size the supply from the draw: 320mA at 12VDC, 170mA at 24VDC. On a long home run from the panel, the 24V leg is the easier one to hold voltage on. Ten feet [3.05m] of jacketed stranded conductor comes off the lock, so plan a junction point within that reach.
6) Can I use a Securitron SAM on a fire rated door opening?
The SAM is fire rated and UL 10C Listed, with UL/cUL, CAN4-S104 and CAN/ULC-S533 listings, ANSI/UL 294 for access control, and California State Fire Marshal approval. It is ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 2. Those are the listings your AHJ will ask for on a fire door or a stair opening. Release scheme and egress hardware still have to meet your local code for the occupancy.
7) Will a shear magnalock release cleanly, or does it stick when power drops?
Residual magnetism is the usual complaint with shear locks, because a shear plate that stays tacked holds the door after release. The SAM uses a patented instant release circuit with no residual magnetism, so the leaf frees on power drop without a push or a shove. That matters most on a swing-through or sliding opening where nobody is pulling against the lock to break it loose.
8) Can a SAM magnalock go in an exterior threshold or an unheated opening?
Yes. The electronics are fully sealed, tamper and weather resistant, all ferrous surfaces are plated to MIL specification, and the operating range is -40 to +140F [-40 to +60C]. That covers a threshold-mounted install, an exterior storefront head, or an unconditioned garage and loading dock opening.
9) What else do I need to order with a SAM shear lock to finish the install?
The lock ships with steel machine screw mounting and a ten foot lead. What varies by opening is the bracket. Securitron sells SAM hardware accessories to configure the mounting for different opening types, and which one you need depends on whether you are going into the header, the door edge or the threshold, and on the frame material. Sort the bracket at the same time you order the lock, and pick your model suffix for monitoring (B for BondSTAT, D for door position switch) since that is not field addable.
10) Is the SAM a mortise lock or a surface mounted mag lock?
It is a mortise mounted electromagnetic shear lock. The body is cut into the frame or the door and disappears when the door is closed, so there is no visible magnet block on the header and no armature plate on the door face. Choose it where the architect will not accept visible hardware, or where the door type (sliding, swing-through) rules out a surface mag. If concealment is not a requirement and you want a simpler install with no mortising, a surface mounted electromagnetic lock is the easier fit.
11) Will the SAM magnalock match the other door hardware finish in my building?
It is finished in architectural brushed stainless steel, US32D/630, which is the standard commercial satin stainless finish and matches the great majority of hollow metal and storefront hardware already in service. In practice the SAM is concealed once installed, so only the exposed edge shows.
