1) Will the Securitron SAM2-24 shear magnet work on a sliding closet door, or is it only for swinging doors?
Both. The SAM2-24 Shear Aligning Magnalock holds swinging or sliding doors with 600 lbs of force, and it mounts fully concealed in any position: at the header, the door edge, or the threshold. That mounting flexibility is why it gets used on sliding closet doors, atriums, cabinet doors, and other small openings where a surface direct-pull mag has nowhere to sit. Because it's a shear lock, the armature and magnet sit flush and pull against each other sideways rather than face to face, so nothing protrudes into the opening.
2) Do I need to order the bond sensor version of the SAM2-24, or the plain one?
Two models are offered: the SAM2-24 with no monitoring, and the SAM2C-24 with a bond sensor. Order the SAM2C-24 if your access control system or head-end needs to know the door is actually secured and the magnet is bonded to the armature, which is typical on monitored perimeter or stairwell openings and anywhere you're logging door status. If the mag is just holding a closet or cabinet door with no monitoring point back to a panel, the plain SAM2-24 is enough. The bond sensor is not a field add-on, it's chosen at the time of order.
3) What door materials can the SAM2-24 Magnalock be mortised into?
Wood, steel, aluminum, and Herculite doors all take the SAM2-24. It mortises in fully concealed, and the smaller body is specifically there for tight installs where a full size shear lock won't fit the frame or the top rail. The lock body is metal and all ferrous surfaces are plated to MIL specifications, with an architectural brushed stainless steel finish in US32D/630.
4) Can a Securitron shear magnalock be installed outdoors or in an unheated space?
Operating range on the SAM2-24 runs -40 to +140F (-40 to +60C), and the electronics are fully sealed against tamper and weather. That covers unheated parking structures, vestibules, exterior gates, and cold storage corridors. It's rated weather resistant, though as a mortised device it still needs the door and frame prep to keep standing water out of the pocket.
5) Will the door stick or drag after the SAM2-24 releases?
No. The SAM2-24 uses an instant release circuit with no residual magnetism, so the armature lets go cleanly the moment power drops instead of clinging to the magnet face. On a shear lock that matters more than on a direct pull, because a shear armature that hasn't fully released will bind the door in the frame rather than just hold it shut. Being a fail safe magnetic lock, loss of power unlocks the opening.
6) Should I use a shear lock like the SAM2-24 or a surface mounted magnetic lock?
It comes down to whether the hardware can show. A surface mount mag bolts to the underside of the header with the armature on the door face, so it's visible, quicker to install, and easy to service. A shear aligning lock like the SAM2-24 mortises into the door and frame and vanishes, which is what you want on glass storefronts, architectural interiors, atriums, and sliding doors where there's no header face to mount to. The trade is prep: a shear lock needs a pocket machined into the door or frame and needs the two halves to align, so it's the harder install and the better looking one.
