Securitron M380EBD 628 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What voltage does the Securitron M380E maglock run on, and do I have to set a jumper for 12V or 24V?
No field adjustment. The M380E runs 12/24VDC and autosenses which one it is on using microprocessor-controlled dual voltage, so the same unit drops onto either supply out of the box. Average draw is 140mA at 12VDC or 90mA at 24VDC, with a maximum of 585mA at 12VDC and 310mA at 24VDC. Size the power supply off the maximum figure, not the average.
2) What is the difference between the Securitron M380EBD and the M380EBDX?
The BD is the base build: BondSTAT bond sensor, door position switch, tamper sensor, LED status indicator and the adjustable 0 to 30 second relock timer. The BDX is the same lock plus an integrated passive infrared request to exit sensor, so an approaching person unlocks the door for egress without a separate wall-mounted REX device. The PIR beam pattern is configurable to shape the detection area. Order the BDX only if you want the REX built in, and note the REX needs its own continuous power input, drawing an extra 25mA at 12VDC or 10mA at 24VDC on top of the lock.
3) Can I use a Securitron M380E maglock on a fire rated door?
The M380E carries a fire rating and is UL 10C Listed along with CAN4-S104 / CAN-ULC, UL 1034 and UL 294, and it is California State Fire Marshal approved. Those are the listings an inspector looks for on a fire door installation. The lock still has to be tied into the fire alarm so it releases on alarm, which is a code requirement for the opening, not a function of the lock.
4) Can a Securitron M380E maglock be mounted on an exterior door or in an unheated space?
No. The M380E is rated indoor use only, +32 to +110F (0 to +43C). An exterior gate, a loading dock, or an unconditioned stairwell that swings below freezing is outside its operating range. For a perimeter door, the lock has to sit on the interior face inside conditioned space.
5) Does the Securitron M380E work on an out-swing door?
Out-swing is the standard application. The M380E ships with an updated strike plate mounting template built around out-swing openings, with the lock body on the frame at the head and the strike on the door face. In-swing or centre-hung openings need a bracket kit (Z, L or LZ style depending on the swing) rather than direct mounting, so specify the bracket with the lock.
6) What does BondSTAT on the Securitron M380E actually tell me, and is it different from a door position switch?
They answer two different questions and the M380E has both. BondSTAT is a lock sensor that reports whether the magnet has achieved a full bond against the armature, so a door that is closed but not properly bonded (misaligned strike, debris, a warped door) shows up instead of reading as secure. The door position switch only reports closed or not closed. The LED on the cover shows all three states: secure, open, or incomplete bond. For an access control head end, that means you can alarm on a weak bond, not just a held-open door.
7) Will replacing an older Securitron M380 with the M380E cut my power bill on a large door count?
The M380E EcoMag draws up to 80 percent less than the previous M380 series. The saving comes from two places: the base electronics, and door prop sensing, which de-energizes the coil when a door is propped open for an extended period and drops the draw as low as 20mA at 12V. On a facility running dozens of maglocks on doors that get held open for deliveries or cleaning, that is where the number lands. Standby draw when locked is 140mA at 12VDC or 90mA at 24VDC.
8) What finishes does the Securitron M380E come in, and is there one I can paint to match a frame?
Ten finishes across both models: 600 paintable primer gray, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 628 satin aluminum clear, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, BSP black suede powder and WSP white suede powder. The 600 primer gray is the one to order when the lock has to disappear into a painted frame, it is supplied ready for finish paint. Every finish except WSP is orderable on both the M380EBD and the M380EBDX.
9) Does the Securitron M380E have tamper protection if someone pulls the cover off?
Two tamper points. A cover tamper switch sends an alarm output if the housing is removed, and it is field selectable to normally open or normally closed to match whatever your panel input expects. There is also a separate anti-tamper switch in the wire chamber, so opening the wiring compartment is detected independently. All ferrous surfaces are plated for rust resistance, which matters on doors that see wet mopping or humidity.
10) Do I still need a separate request to exit device with a Securitron M380E maglock?
Depends which model you order. The M380EBDX has a passive infrared REX built into the lock housing, with an adjustable beam so you can tune the detection zone to the traffic pattern and avoid nuisance releases from people walking past. The M380EBD has no REX, so egress has to come from elsewhere, typically a REX in the exit device or a separate motion sensor. If you are wiring the BDX REX, budget a separate continuous power feed for it; it will not run off the lock's switched power.
11) How long does the Securitron M380E stay unlocked after a valid credential, and can that be changed?
The automatic relock timer is adjustable from 0 to 30 seconds, and it is a feature of the BD and BDX models only. Set it to 0 for immediate relock behind the door, or run it out toward 30 seconds on an accessible opening where someone needs longer to clear the threshold.
