1) What sizes and lengths does the Spears 88 Series Schedule 80 PVC nipple come in?
The 88 Series TBE nipple runs from 3/4 inch through 3 inch trade size. In 3/4 inch you can get close, 6 inch and 12 inch lengths; 1 inch comes in 3 inch and 12 inch; 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 3 inch each come in 12 inch; and 2 inch is offered as a close nipple. Part numbers follow the size: 883 is 3/4 inch, 884 is 1 inch, 885 is 1-1/4, 886 is 1-1/2, 887 is 2 inch and 889 is 3 inch, with the suffix giving the length (883-060 is 3/4 x 6 inch).
2) Are these Spears PVC nipples threaded on both ends or socket on one end?
Both ends are threaded. The 88 Series is a TBE nipple, so it screws directly into female NPT ports on threaded fittings, valves, strainers and equipment at each end. If you need to glue one end into a socket fitting, this is not the part; a TBE nipple gives you no solvent-weld socket or spigot anywhere on it.
3) Will a Schedule 80 PVC nipple thread into my Schedule 40 PVC fittings?
Yes. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC use the same NPT taper thread at the same trade sizes, so an 88 Series Sch 80 nipple threads into a Sch 40 female port fine. The difference is wall thickness, not thread. Sch 80 has the heavier wall, which is why it is used for threaded connections in the first place, threading a Sch 40 part cuts away too much of a thin wall. Bear in mind the system pressure rating drops to whatever the weakest component is, so a Sch 80 nipple does not upgrade a Sch 40 line.
4) What does the "Close" length mean on the 3/4 inch and 2 inch Spears nipples?
A close nipple is threaded end to end with no unthreaded body between the threads, so it gives the shortest possible make-up between two female-threaded fittings. Spears calls it the XCL close pattern. Use it when you are bolting a valve straight onto a fitting with no room for a 3 inch or longer nipple. The tradeoff is that there is no wrench flat, so you have to grip the threads themselves, which on PVC means care not to crush or gall the nipple.
5) Can I use a PVC nipple to connect to a metal threaded valve or pump?
You can thread the 88 Series PVC nipple into a female metal port, but run the PVC as the male side only, which is how this nipple is configured with threads on both ends. A metal male thread driven into a PVC female fitting is what splits fittings. Use PTFE tape or a PVC-compatible thread sealant, hand tight plus one to two turns, and never over-torque, PVC threads wedge and crack rather than stretch the way metal does.
6) I need a longer run than 12 inches between two threaded fittings, what should I use?
The 88 Series tops out at 12 inch nipples, which is the longest length offered in 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 3 inch. For anything past that, run Schedule 80 pipe between two male adapters instead of chaining nipples, that gives you any length you want and one fewer threaded joint per foot than stacking nipples and couplings.
7) Is this Spears nipple suitable for chemical process or water treatment piping?
That is the intended use. Spears lists the 88 Series for industrial and commercial PVC piping, threaded valve and fitting connections, chemical-resistant process piping, water treatment and filtration, and general renovation or new construction plumbing. The Schedule 80 PVC body carries the chemical resistance PVC is known for. It is a cold-water and chemical service material, so keep it off hot water or steam lines.
8) What is the difference between the Spears 883, 884, 887 and 889 nipples?
Trade size, nothing else. All are TBE Schedule 80 PVC nipples from the same 88 Series with the same close or cut-length pattern. The third digit of the prefix steps the size: 883 is 3/4 inch, 884 is 1 inch, 885 is 1-1/4 inch, 886 is 1-1/2 inch, 887 is 2 inch and 889 is 3 inch. The three digit suffix is the length in tenths of an inch of the nominal call-out, so -060 is 6 inch, -120 is 12 inch, and -005 is the close pattern.
