1) Does the Spears CWV ball valve glue on, or does it thread?
It's a socket-connection valve, so it solvent-welds onto PVC pipe. You cut the pipe square, deburr, prime and cement into the socket ends. If your run is threaded, you'd need to transition with a male or female adapter before the valve rather than trying to thread into it.
2) Can I use a Spears CWV PVC ball valve on a hot water line?
No. The CWV designation is cold water, and the valve is purpose-built for cold water distribution. PVC body material is not a hot water material. For hot side service you want a CPVC or metal valve instead.
3) What seal material is in the Spears CWV ball valve, and why does it matter for water service?
EPDM. EPDM is the elastomer Spears specifies for long-term cold water sealing on this valve. If your line carries petroleum-based fluids or oils rather than water, EPDM is the wrong seal family and you should be looking at a Viton-sealed valve.
4) Will a Spears CWV socket ball valve work in a CPVC system?

5) Any install tips for solvent-welding a PVC ball valve so I don't cook the seals?
Two things matter with a socket ball valve. Leave the ball in the full open position while you cement, and don't flood the socket with excess cement that can run past the seat onto the ball. Keep the joint square and let the cement cure before you pressurize. The EPDM seals are what seal this valve, and cement on the seat is the usual cause of a weeper on a new install.
6) Is the Spears CWV a quarter-turn shutoff or a throttling valve?
