Square D MGL36400 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size conductors will the PowerPacT M-Frame MGL lugs take, and what is the torque?
The line and load lug terminals accept 3 x AWG 3/0 through 3 x 500 kcmil aluminum or copper conductors per pole, torqued to 50 N.m. If your feeder run calls for larger than 500 kcmil per phase, you will need a different termination arrangement, not this lug kit.
2) Is 18kA enough interrupting capacity for my 480V switchboard?
The MGL M-Frame is rated 18kA interrupting at 600VAC rated operational voltage, with 750V rated insulation voltage per IEC 60947-2. That means the available fault current at the point of installation must be 18kA or less, or the breaker has to be series-rated by the equipment manufacturer. Many 480V commercial switchboards see available fault current well above 18kA, so check your coordination study before specifying this one.
3) Can I load the 400A PowerPacT MGL breaker to its full 400 amps continuously?
No. The MGL M-Frame carries an 80% continuous current rating, so a 400A frame is good for 320A continuous in normal enclosed applications. Size the frame above your calculated continuous load accordingly, or step up to the 500A, 600A or 800A version.
4) Is the Square D PowerPacT MGL breaker UL Listed and acceptable for an inspected commercial job?
Yes. The PowerPacT M-Frame MGL is UL Listed and CSA Certified, built to NEMA standards, compliant with IEC 60947-2, and NOM-003-SCFI-2000 compliant. It is manufactured in Mexico.
5) What adjustment does the ET 1.0 trip unit on the PowerPacT M give me?
ET 1.0 is the basic electronic trip unit: magnetic tripping current is adjustable across 800 to 4000 A, and a local green trip indicator shows status at the breaker. If you need ground fault protection, metering, or long-time and short-time curve shaping for selective coordination, ET 1.0 is not the trip unit for that job.
6) How much panel space does the PowerPacT M-Frame breaker need?
Plan for a unit measuring 12.86 x 8.27 x 8.05 inches (height, width, depth). The case is black. Confirm your panelboard or switchboard section depth against the 8.05 inch figure before you commit, since M-Frame is a physically large molded case breaker.
7) Can I use the M-Frame MGL for motor feeder protection?
Motor and feeder circuit protection is a listed application for the M-Frame, and the 500A, 600A and 800A variants are catalogued against motor FLA values of 500A, 600A and 800A respectively, with the 400A unit as the standard FLA option. Match the breaker to the motor full load amps your drawing calls out.
8) What other 400A 3-pole molded case breakers could I use instead of the Square D MGL36400?
Among other brands carried, the Eaton Series C K-Frame mining circuit breaker is a 400A 3-pole molded case unit with an interchangeable rating plug, which gives you field-changeable amp settings the ET 1.0 M-Frame does not. ABB's A2 Series (A2A150TT) and the XT4 and XT5 kits are the ABB-side 3-pole molded case options. Note these are different frames with different mounting and termination arrangements, so swapping brands means re-checking the enclosure fit, not just the amp rating.
9) Will an ABB ST200M miniature breaker or a Bussmann CBC automotive breaker work in place of a PowerPacT M-Frame?
No, those are different classes of device. The ABB ST200M is a miniature circuit breaker with a C-curve built to UL1077, a supplementary protector rather than a branch-circuit breaker, and the Bussmann CBC series is a Type I automotive circuit breaker rated 14VDC. The Square D PowerPacT M-Frame MGL breakers are UL Listed, CSA certified molded case breakers rated 600VAC with 18kA interrupting capacity for commercial and industrial distribution.
10) What is the difference between the Square D PowerPacT M-Frame and the ABB A2A150TT?
Both are 3-pole molded case circuit breakers. The ABB A2A150TT is an A2N series breaker from ABB's A2 frame. The Square D PowerPacT M-Frame covers MGL36400 at 400A plus MGL36500, MGL36600 and MGL36800 in the 500 to 800A range, all 3-pole, 600VAC, 18kA interrupting, with an ET 1.0 electronic trip unit, an 80 percent continuous current rating and magnetic tripping current adjustable 800 to 4000 A. The A2 frame is a smaller-frame ABB product line with its own mounting and accessory ecosystem.
11) Do I need to derate this breaker if it is installed at high altitude?
Below 6,561.68 ft (2,000 m) no derating applies. The M-Frame is rated for use up to 13,123.36 ft (4,000 m) with derating, so installations between those elevations need the altitude correction applied to voltage and current ratings.
12) Can the PowerPacT M-Frame be serviced or fitted with accessories after installation?
Yes, the M-Frame is a serviceable, field-upgradeable breaker with a range of field-installable accessories, and Square D cites an average life duration of 15 years. For panel builders that means auxiliary contacts and similar add-ons can go on in the field rather than requiring a factory-built assembly.
