1) My existing doors are bored for a 2-3/8 inch backset. Can I still use a QCL100 lever lock?
Yes. The QCL160 as configured ships with a square 2-3/4 inch (70mm) backset latch, which is the commercial standard, but the QCL100 series is also offered in 2-3/8 inch (60mm) and 5 inch (127mm) backsets. Specify the 2-3/8 inch backset to match older or residential-depth bores.
2) What does the classroom function on this Stanley lever actually do?
QCL160 is the classroom function, ANSI F84. The outside lever is locked and unlocked only by key from the outside; the inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress. That means a teacher has to step into the corridor with a key to lock the door. If you want the door lockable from inside the room without opening it, look at the classroom security function instead, QCL168 (or QCL169 for small format interchangeable core).
3) This QCL160 is listed as less cylinder. What do I have to order to make it work?
Less cylinder (LC) means the lock arrives with no cylinder installed, so you supply and install your own to bring it onto your existing key system. The QCL100 series uses 6-pin brass cylinders and is offered factory-keyed in BF (BEST), KW (Kwikset), WE (Weiser), SC (Schlage), GA (Yale) and LA (Sargent) keyways if you would rather have it keyed from the factory with two keys per lockset. If your building runs small format interchangeable cores, order the SFIC classroom version, QCL161, and drop your existing cores straight in.
4) Will this lockset latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latch bolt throws 1/2 inch (steel on the keyed/exterior side), and the lock is supplied with the ANSI strike measuring 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, which is the standard ASA lip strike cut into most commercial hollow metal frames. If your frame has that ASA prep, you can reuse the existing strike or install the one supplied. Other strike options are available in the series for T-strike or non-standard frame preps.
5) What is a comparable Grade 1 mechanical keyed cylindrical lever to the Stanley QCL160 classroom lock?
The Dorma C853 is a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever lockset in entrance function with a door thickness range of 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The QCL160 is the classroom function (ANSI F84) member of the QCL100 series and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both are mechanical keyed cylindrical levers; the difference is function - classroom keys the outside lever locked or unlocked from the key side only, while the C853 is an entrance/office lock. Marks USA 195RAB is another Grade 1 clutched lever in entrance/office function, supplied less core.
6) If the classroom door needs lockdown from inside the room, what should be used instead of the Stanley QCL160?
The QCL160 is classroom function (ANSI F84), which is keyed from the outside only. The QCL160 covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch door thickness as standard. For thicker doors, the Dorma C853 entrance lever and the Dorma C150 Grade 1 entry/office cylindrical lock both list a range of 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Both are keyed Grade 1 cylindrical levers, though in entrance/office function rather than classroom.
8) Do I need to order a left-hand or right-hand version of this Stanley lever lock?
No handing to specify. All QCL100 series lever locksets are non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand door and one part number covers every opening in the building. That is useful if you are stocking spares for a school or a multi-building campus.

11) Can I standardize a whole building on the QCL100 series and still get different functions per door?
Yes, that is the point of the series. Same lever, rose, prep and backset across the building, with function chosen per opening: QCL130 passage (F75), QCL140 privacy (F76), QCL150 entry/office (F109), QCL154 corridor (F90), QCL160 classroom (F84), QCL168 classroom security, QCL170 storeroom (F86), QCL120 single dummy, plus electronically locked (QCL192) and electronically unlocked (QCL194) versions. SFIC variants exist for entry, corridor, classroom, classroom security, storeroom and the electrified models. Request-to-exit is available on QCL170, QCL171, QCL192, QCL193, QCL194 and QCL195.
12) What keyless or electronic alternative covers the same classroom opening as the Stanley QCL160?

The QCL160 is supplied less cylinder and takes a conventional 6-pin brass cylinder in keyways including BEST, Kwikset, Weiser, Schlage, Yale and Sargent. If the facility is standardized on small format interchangeable cores, QCL161 is the SFIC version of the same ANSI F84 classroom function. Marks USA 175RF is another small format IC lever supplied less core, in Grade 2 storeroom function.
