Stanley Security QDC117 M 689 LH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the QDC117 door closer replace an LCN 4040 without re-prepping the door?
Yes. The QDC100 family, which the QDC117 belongs to, uses the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so it goes on as a direct off-and-on exchange with no new drilling.
2) What size door will the Stanley QDC117 closer handle?
Spring power adjusts through sizes 1 to 6, which covers interior doors from 30 to 48 inches wide and exterior doors from 32 to 48 inches. One closer stocked in your shop covers essentially the whole range of standard commercial openings.
3) Do I have to order the QDC117 closer handed?
The closer body is non-handed and universal mount, but the QDC117 is ordered with a left or right handing selection because of the extra duty arm and metal cover. Note the handed nature applies to the arm and cover, not the hydraulic body itself.
4) Is the QDC117 closer fire rated and ADA compliant?
It is UL/cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b for fire door use, certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4, and meets ANSI A117.1 for accessibility. A Barrier Free option is also available when opening force has to be held down on an accessible opening.
5) What is the closest Grade 1 heavy duty equivalent to the Stanley QDC117 closer?
The QDC117 is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface closer with adjustable spring sizes 1 to 6. The closest peers on the same grade and duty level are the BEST EHD9000 Series extra heavy-duty surface closer with adjustable spring sizes 1-6, the BEST HD8000 Series heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer, the Falcon SC71A Series heavy-duty surface closer, and the Sargent 1431 Powerglide heavy-duty surface closer with adjustable spring power. Any of these covers the same heavy-traffic institutional opening the QDC117 is built for.
6) I need a cast iron heavy duty closer like the QDC117 but from another manufacturer. What are my options?
The QDC117 uses a cast iron body with a cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms. Among the cast iron peers, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a cast iron surface closer rated Grade 1 heavy duty, and the LCN 1261 uses cast iron construction with adjustable spring sizes 1 to 5 at a light to medium duty level. The Sargent 281 is the nearer match on duty level.
7) The QDC117 is more closer than I need for a light interior office door. What is a lighter alternative?
For lighter interior traffic, step down from the QDC117's heavy duty rating. The BEST SL6000 Series is a Grade 1 light duty surface closer with adjustable spring sizes, the Arrow DC314 from the DC300 Series is a Grade 1 light duty surface closer, the Norton Rixson 160 Series is a Grade 1 light duty light commercial closer, and the LCN 1250 Series is a light duty closer in sizes 1-5 with all-weather fluid and ADA compliance. The Falcon SC91A is light duty but carries a Grade 3 rating, so check that against your spec.
8) My opening needs a hold open arm. The QDC117 comes with an extra duty arm with stop, so what should I use instead?
The QDC117 ships with an extra duty arm with stop rather than a hold open function. For a hold open opening, the Accentra 51 Series is an industrial closer with a tri-packed hold open arm in sizes 1-6, and the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 hold open model uses a tri-packed hold open arm with a parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both give you the hold open function the QDC117 arm does not provide.
9) Can I use the Cal-Royal 400 Series in place of the Stanley QDC117?
Only if your spec allows a lower grade. The QDC117 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 at Grade 1 and is heavy duty. The Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic closer, so it will not satisfy a drawing calling for Grade 1. If you want a Cal-Royal at Grade 1, the 500S barrier free closer with adjustable back-check and the 700S dual valve sized closer with adjustable tube arm are both Grade 1.
10) I need a barrier free closer for an accessible entrance. Does the QDC117 cover that, and what else does?
The QDC117 is offered in a Barrier Free option and is listed to ANSI A117.1. Comparable barrier free and ADA-rated choices include the Cal-Royal N900PBF 900 Series barrier free Grade 1 hydraulic closer, the Cal-Royal 500S Grade 1 barrier free closer, the Calibre CA9901 tri-pack arm ADA closer in size 2-5, and the Imperial USA TC4300 Series Grade 1 heavy duty ADA closer in size 1-6. The TC4300 is the closest on duty level to the QDC117.
11) Is the LCN 1450 a drop-in replacement for the QDC117?
They are not the same class of closer. The QDC117 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cast iron closer sized 1 to 6 and is dimensioned to the LCN 4040 footprint, bolt pattern and cover profile for an off-and-on exchange. The LCN 1450 is a medium duty closer with a cast aluminum body and spring sizes 1-6. If you are matching an existing LCN heavy duty opening, the LCN 1460T is the heavy duty Grade 1 commercial unit in that lineup.
12) Can this closer be mounted parallel arm on the push side?
Yes, it mounts on either the pull side or the push side, and the universal mount design means the same unit works on a regular arm pull side application or a parallel arm push side one.
13) What does the stop on the QDC117 extra duty arm actually do?
The extra duty arm carries an integral stop, so the arm itself limits how far the door swings instead of relying on a floor or wall stop. That is what you want in a corridor or vestibule where the door would otherwise slam a wall, and it is why this arm suits abuse-prone institutional openings.
14) Is a delayed action or backcheck valve included on the QDC100 closer?
A back check valve is standard on the QDC100 Series, and delayed action is offered as a performance option. Backcheck is the one that protects the door and frame in windy exterior openings; delayed action is what you add on an accessible or high-traffic door where people need longer to get through.
15) Is the QDC117 body cast iron or aluminum?
Cast iron body, cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, with all-weather fluid and staked valves so the adjustment screws cannot be backed out far enough to leak oil. That construction is why it is rated heavy duty rather than medium.
16) Is the QDC117 overkill for a light interior office door?
For a low-traffic interior door it is more closer than the opening needs. The QDC100 is built for heavy duty institutional and industrial service. For lighter work, the Falcon SC91A is a Grade 3 light duty closer, and the BEST SL6000 and Arrow DC314 are Grade 1 light duty options.
17) Is a slide track or jamb track closer a substitute for the QDC117?
They are not interchangeable arms. The QDC117 is a surface closer with an extra duty arm and stop, mounted pull side or push side. The Corbin Russwin DC5230 is a Grade 1 surface closer supplied with a slide track arm as standard for pull side mounting on 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dorma 8916-JT is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a jamb track and a flat non-hold-open arm for frame face pull side mounting in sizes 1-6. Track arms change the header prep and the projection at the door, so specify one only if the opening was detailed for track hardware.
18) I stock one closer for both handings. Does the QDC117 do that, and which competitor closers do the same?
The QDC117 is non-handed with a universal mount design, so a single unit covers pull side and push side openings. Comparable tri-mount closers that install regular, parallel or top jamb from one box include the Dexter DCH1000 Series Grade 1 surface closer with full cover, the Norton Rixson 8501A Grade 1 tri-mount closer in adjustable size 1-6, and the Arrow DCN325 Grade 1 surface closer with a regular/parallel tri-pack arm in sizes 1-6. These are the ones to look at if you are standardizing a single SKU across a facility.
19) Which closers are fire door rated like the QDC117 for a labeled opening?
The QDC117 is UL/cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b, which covers labeled fire door assemblies. If you need another brand on the same labeled opening, hold the substitute to the same Grade 1 heavy duty class - the BEST HD8000 Series, the Falcon SC71A Series, the Sargent 1431 Powerglide, and the Norton Rixson 1600BC aluminum storefront closer are all Grade 1 heavy duty - and confirm the specific fire label listing for the model you pick before it goes on a labeled door.
20) What is the medium duty step between a light duty closer and the QDC117?
Between light duty and the QDC117's heavy duty rating sit several Grade 1 medium duty closers: the BEST HD7000 Series with adjustable spring power and backcheck control, the Sargent 1131 for medium-traffic commercial applications, the Sargent 1331 with a universal aluminum body, the Norton Rixson 1601P tri-mount closer with 180 degree swing, and the Falcon SC81A cast aluminum closer. These suit moderate-traffic interior openings where the full heavy duty body is more than the door needs.
21) I want delayed action on the door. The QDC117 offers it - what other closers do?
Delayed action is available on the QDC100 platform the QDC117 belongs to, along with a back check valve as standard. Among the alternatives, the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 delayed action model pairs a tri-packed non-hold-open regular arm with a parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the BHDC2011 delayed action model is the same arrangement in that series. Delayed action is the feature to specify where slow-moving traffic or carts need extra time in the opening.
22) What finishes does the QDC117 come in, and will it match existing closers in my building?
Three finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. Those are the standard painted closer finishes, so matching a fleet of existing surface closers is usually a matter of picking the same number off your current units.
23) Does the QDC117 come with a cover, and what kind?
It ships with a full-size cover. The trim selection is the R full-size rounded cover, and the rounded profile is part of what makes it line up with an LCN 4040 prep when you are swapping units out.
