It's a 5/8 inch raised plaster ring that mounts to a 4-square (4 inch square) outlet box and brings the device opening forward to the finished wall surface. The 5/8 inch rise is sized to come out flush with 5/8 inch drywall, so the device and coverplate sit tight to the wall instead of recessed in the box. Steel construction, and it's UL listed. 2) Is the 52C3-25 the same part as the old Steel City 52C3?
Yes. The 52C3-25 replaces the 52C3. Same 4-square 5/8 inch raised plaster ring, now catalogued with the 25-piece box quantity in the number.
3) Do I need a 5/8 inch raised ring or a 1/2 inch one for my wall?
Match the rise to the finish thickness. This Steel City ring is the 5/8 inch raise, which is what you want over 5/8 inch drywall, common in commercial and fire-rated assemblies. If the wall is 1/2 inch board, a 5/8 inch ring will stand proud of the surface and you should use a 1/2 inch raised ring instead.
4) Will a steel plaster ring like the Steel City 52C3-25 work in a commercial inspected job?
It's UL listed and made of steel, which is what an inspector looks for on a metal raceway or EMT system where the ring has to carry the bonding path through to the box and device. Plastic rings do not serve that purpose.
