Steel City 58361 3/4 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the difference between the Steel City 58361 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch utility boxes?
The size in the part number is the knockout/hub trade size, not the box size. Order 58361 1/2 for 1/2 inch conduit or connectors and 58361 3/4 for 3/4 inch. Both are the same drawn steel single gang handy box otherwise, with the same 13 cubic inch volume.
2) How many conductors can I put in a 13 cubic inch handy box?
The 58361 gives you 13 cubic inches of usable volume. Under the standard NEC box fill allowances, that works out to five 14 AWG conductors (2.25 cu in each) or five 12 AWG conductors (2.5 cu in each) before you count the device, clamps, and grounds, each of which eats further allowance. If you are landing a receptacle plus a ground and a couple of cables, you are at the limit fast, so size up to a deeper box for a multi-cable splice point.
3) Can the Steel City 58361 utility box be mounted on the surface of a block or concrete wall?
Yes, it is a surface mounted housing, so it sits on the face of the wall rather than inside a stud cavity. That makes it the usual choice for exposed conduit work on masonry, in mechanical rooms, garages, and back-of-house areas where you are not cutting into finished drywall.
4) Does the Steel City 58361 utility box come with a cover?
No cover is included. The 58361 is the box only, so add a handy box cover to suit the device you are installing (blank, single receptacle, duplex, or toggle switch). Bushings or connectors for the conduit entry are also separate.
5) Is the Steel City 58361 UL listed?
Yes. The 58361 carries UL file E2969.
6) Does the 58361 have to be installed in a particular orientation?
It is specified for vertical mounting, so the long axis of the box runs up and down the wall and the device sits vertically in the opening. If your layout needs the device turned sideways, plan the conduit runs around a vertically mounted box rather than rotating it.
7) What is the 58361 utility box made of, and is it painted?
Drawn steel with a silver finish. Drawn construction means the body is formed from one piece rather than welded at the corners, so there are no seams at the box sides.
