Steel City 82C-1G 5-Square Single Gang Extension Ring

Seven depths: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. The part number carries the depth on the end, so 82C-1G-3/4 is the 3/4 inch ring and 82C-1G-2 is the 2 inch. Pick the depth by how far your existing box sits behind the finished wall surface plus the room you need for device wiring.

That is exactly what it does. It is a single gang extension ring on a 5-square body, so the back flange covers the full 5 x 5 box and the front presents one device opening for a single switch, receptacle or dimmer. If you need two devices out of the same 5-square box, order the two gang version of the ring instead.

An extension ring like the 82C-1G is the standard fix. It bolts to the front of the existing 5-square box and moves the device opening forward by the ring depth, so with 1/4 and 1/2 inch rings you can pick up thin tile or a second layer of board, and the 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch rings handle furred out walls. It also adds box volume, which helps when the original box is already tight on conductors.

Steel, in a silver finish. That makes it suitable for the metal box and metal raceway work the 5-square body is normally used on, and it keeps the metallic enclosure continuous for bonding purposes.

A plaster (device) ring is a shallow cover that adapts the box to a device and wall finish but adds little usable volume. An extension ring like the 82C-1G is a full depth collar, 1/4 up to 2 inches, that adds real cubic capacity behind the device as well as bringing the opening forward. If your problem is fill, or the box is buried more than a raised plaster ring can cover, use the extension ring.

Rather than stacking, order the single ring that gets you there. The line runs to 2 inches deep in one piece (82C-1G-2), with 1, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch steps below it, so most furred out or double layered walls are covered without doubling up. One ring also means one set of mounting screws and one clean device plane.

The shallow pair, 1/4 and 1/2 inch, covers finish corrections where a box sits slightly proud of or behind new board or tile. The 3/4 and 1 inch cover most single layer add-ons. Keep a 1-1/2 or 2 inch for retrofits over furring or panelling. All seven are the same 5 x 5 steel single gang body, so plates and devices stay consistent across the building.
