1) Is the Steel City CYLE switch box surface mounted or does it go inside the wall?
The CYLE is a surface mounted steel housing, so it sits on the face of the wall, ceiling or structural member rather than being recessed into a stud bay. That makes it the box to use on masonry, concrete, exposed block walls and utility spaces where you cannot cut in a wall box. If the opening is finished drywall and the device has to sit flush, this is the wrong box type.
2) What trade size conduit does the Steel City CYLE switch box take?
Two versions are made: CYLE 1/2 for 1/2 inch trade size and CYLE 3/4 for 3/4 inch. Order to match the conduit or fitting you are running into the box. The box is single gang with one outlet opening, so it holds one switch or one receptacle device.
3) How many conductors can I legally put in an 18 cubic inch switch box?
The CYLE gives you 18 cubic inches of volume, which is the number you use for NEC box fill. At 2.25 cubic inches per 14 AWG conductor that works out to eight 14 AWG conductors, and at 2.5 cubic inches per 12 AWG conductor, seven 12 AWG conductors, before you deduct for the device, clamps and grounds. Count the device as two conductors and all grounds together as one.
4) What are the dimensions of the Steel City CYLE box and will a standard single gang plate cover it?
The CYLE measures 3 inches height by 2 inches width by 3-1/2 inches depth, with the device width given as 50.8mm. That 2 inch face width is standard single gang, so a normal single gang device plate lines up. Note the 3-1/2 inch depth: it projects off the wall by that amount since the box is surface mounted, so check clearance against door swings, trim and equipment before locating it.
5) Does the CYLE switch box come with knockouts, or do I have to drill it?
Knockouts are provided, so no field drilling is needed for the normal conduit entries. Punch only the ones you use and leave the rest closed, or fit approved seals in any you open and do not use.
6) Can the CYLE switch box be mounted sideways for a horizontal device?
The CYLE is specified for vertical mounting, which puts the 3 inch dimension up and down and the switch toggle in the normal orientation. If your layout calls for a horizontal device, plan the run for a vertical box instead of turning this one.
7) How do Steel City CYLE boxes ship for a larger job, and are they paintable?
They come 25 to a carton, which suits stocking a van or a multi-unit rough in. The body is steel with a silver finish; steel takes field paint if you are matching an exposed run to the wall color.
