1) How many wires can I put in a Steel City LXOW switch box?
The LXOW is a 12.5 cubic inch steel device box, 3 x 2 x 2-1/2 inches. Box fill is calculated from that 12.5 in3 against the conductor sizes you are running, and the device itself, clamps, and grounds all take their share of it. For a standard single-gang switch or receptacle on 14 AWG or 12 AWG branch circuit, 12.5 in3 is the common workhorse volume; if you are pulling more than a couple of cables into the same box, step up to a deeper or larger box rather than crowding this one.
2) Is the LXOW box designed for armored cable (AC) or for conduit?
It is an AC box. The LXOW ships with 1/2 inch knockouts and integral armored cable clamps, so BX or AC cable lands in the box without a separate connector. If your run is EMT or rigid, you want a box set up for conduit instead; the 1/2 inch KOs will accept a conduit connector, but the internal AC clamps are there for cable work.
3) Will the LXOW take a standard single-gang switch or receptacle and a regular cover plate?
Yes. This is a one-device (single gang) steel box at the standard 3 x 2 inch face, so any normal toggle switch, duplex receptacle, decorator device, and matching single-gang plate mounts to it on the usual device screws.
4) What is the difference between the LXOW-25L and LXOW-25R?
Both are the same 3 x 2 x 2-1/2 inch box sold 25 to the pack. The difference is the packaging designation: LXOW-25L is the 25 (L) pack and LXOW-25R is the 25 (R/PK) pack. Pick whichever pack format suits how your crew stages material; the box itself does not change.
5) Is this a steel box or plastic, and will it work for grounding metal cable?
Steel. Being a metal box, it bonds through the AC armor and connectors as part of the equipment grounding path, which is why steel boxes are the standard choice for BX and AC work in commercial buildings. Plastic boxes cannot do that and are limited to nonmetallic cable.
6) Is the LXOW deep enough for a dimmer or a smart switch?
At 2-1/2 inches deep with 12.5 cubic inches of volume, it handles most standard dimmers and single-device smart switches, but those bodies are bulky and eat fill fast once you have two cables and grounds in the box. If you are stacking a large smart switch on a multi-cable feed-through, go to a deeper box.
7) Where is the Steel City LXOW box made?
