    1) Will a heated strobe dome keep a notification appliance working in sub-zero outdoor temperatures?
    The STI Stopper Dome Heated Enclosure keeps the device inside operating down to -70 F (-57 C). A thermostatically controlled heater plus a continuous-duty fan circulates warmth through the dome, so the strobe stays within its operating range and the cover stays free of ice and snow buildup.
    2) What do I have to specify when ordering an STI heated dome enclosure?
    Two choices. First, heater voltage: 110 VAC or 240 VAC. Second, use type: Standard or Hazardous. All four combinations are built, so a 240 VAC hazardous-location unit and a 110 VAC standard unit are both orderable.
    3) Is the STI heated dome enclosure rated for washdown and outdoor wet locations?
    It carries a Type 4X rating, which covers hosedown, washdown and corrosion exposure as well as rain and snow, and it is UL/cUL Listed for both US and Canadian requirements. The cover is clear UV-stabilized polycarbonate, so it will not haze out from sun exposure the way untreated plastic does.
    4) Does the heated dome need its own power circuit separate from the fire alarm strobe?
    Plan on it. The heater is line voltage, either 110 VAC or 240 VAC, and runs independently of the low-voltage notification circuit feeding the strobe. That means a dedicated AC feed to the enclosure in addition to the NAC wiring, which is the detail most often missed on an outdoor retrofit.
    5) Will the strobe still be visible through the dome for ADA signaling?
    Yes. The dome is clear polycarbonate and the heater and fan keep snow and condensation off it, so the strobe's light output stays visible and ADA-compliant signaling is not blocked.
    6) Why not just use an unheated polycarbonate strobe cover outdoors?
    An unheated cover stops impact and spray but does nothing about ice. In freezing climates snow packs on the dome and condensation forms inside, and the appliance itself can drop below its rated operating temperature. The heated version adds a thermostat-controlled heater and fan so the device stays functional to -70 F (-57 C) and the dome stays clear. If your install never sees freezing, an unheated Type 4X cover is the simpler choice with no AC feed to run.
