Klein Tools 603-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Klein 603-1 safe to use on live electrical work?
No. The 603-1 is not insulated and will not protect against electrical shock, despite the cushioned handle. Rubber grip on a screwdriver is comfort, not dielectric protection. For energized work you need a driver specifically rated and marked as insulated to 1000V. De-energize and verify before using this one.
2) Does the Klein 603-1 stubby hold screws magnetically?
It does not. The tip is non-magnetic, so a screw won't stay on the driver by itself. In tight overhead or vertical work, start the screw by hand or use a magnetizer. The precision-machined #2 Phillips tip is cut for fit and torque without cam-out, not for retention.
3) What size screws does a #2 Phillips stubby driver like the Klein 603-1 actually drive?
A #2 Phillips tip is the standard size for most electrical device screws, receptacle and switch plate screws, and general wood screws in the #6 to #10 range. That covers the majority of what an electrician or maintenance tech touches in a panel or on a device. Smaller screws in low-voltage plates or control terminals typically want a #1.
4) Does the Klein 603-1 meet a recognized tool standard, and where is it made?
Klein states the 603-1 meets or exceeds applicable ASME/ANSI specifications, and it is made in the USA. That matters on public and institutional jobs where domestic sourcing or a stated standard has to be documented on the tool.
5) Is the Klein 603-1 stubby tough enough for daily service work, and can I pry with it?
It's a steel driver with a special heat-treated shaft and internal flanges molded into the handle that anchor the blade against twisting, so it takes repeated hard torque. But don't pry or chisel with it. Short shanks tempt people into using them as a lever, and that's how tips get bent and handles get broken. The chrome plating also handles corrosion in damp mechanical rooms and service trucks.
6) How do I tell the Klein 603-1 apart from the slotted stubby when they're both in the pouch?
Klein puts Tip-Ident on the end of the handle, so the tip type and orientation are marked on the butt of the driver. You read it looking down into the pouch rather than pulling each one out. The 603-1 is the #2 Phillips; the handle is black with a Cushion-Grip rubber surface.
