Sylvania 20908 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Sylvania 14W T5 lamp dimmable, and what do I need to dim it?
Yes, the lamp is a dimmable T5 High Performance type. Dimming depends on the ballast: it needs a dimming ballast and a compatible control. Run on a standard fixed-output electronic ballast it simply operates at full output.
2) Can a Philips 236794 T8 lamp be used in place of a 14-watt T5 fluorescent tube?
No. The Sylvania 20908 is a T5 High Performance linear fluorescent lamp, 14-watt, 24-inch, with a 2-Pin Miniature base. The Philips Lighting 236794 is a T8 high output fluorescent lamp rated 44-watt at 4100K. T8 and T5 lamps differ in tube diameter, length, base, and ballast requirement, so the T8 will not seat or operate in a T5 socket. For a T5 fixture, stay with the T5 lamp.
3) How much light does a 14-watt T5 lamp put out, and is 82 CRI good enough for retail display?
Output is 1200 to 1350 lumens at 14 watts, with 82 CRI. At 82 CRI the lamp renders color accurately enough for general office, retail sales floor, and hospitality lighting. For color-critical work such as paint matching, print proofing, or apparel color inspection, specify a high-CRI lamp (90 plus) instead.
4) Which Sylvania part number do I order for 3500K T5 tubes for my building standard?
Order Sylvania 20908 for the 3500K version of the 14-watt 24-inch T5 High Performance lamp. The 4100K version of the same lamp is 20914. Both share the 14W rating, 2-pin miniature base, and 24-inch length, so either drops into the same fixtures.
5) For color-critical retail display, is there a higher CRI lamp than an 82 CRI T5?
The Sylvania T5 High Performance lamp renders at 82 CRI, which covers most office and retail work. Where color accuracy drives the specification, the Philips Lighting 479634 Alto II is a high CRI linear fluorescent lamp. Note that the Alto II is a T8 lamp, so it suits T8 fixtures rather than the T5 sockets the Sylvania lamp fits.
6) I need a dimmable fluorescent tube for a lighting control system - which one should I order?
The Sylvania T5 High Performance 14-watt lamp is specified as dimmable and is intended for use with compatible dimming systems. The Philips Lighting 236794 Alto high output T8 and the 479634 Alto II high CRI T8 are catalogued by series and output rather than as dimming lamps, so for a dimmed T5 circuit the Sylvania lamp is the direct answer.
7) I need a higher-CRI linear fluorescent for a showroom - what else do you carry?
The Sylvania 14W T5 is an 82 CRI lamp. For higher color rendering in a linear fluorescent, the Philips Alto II T8 High CRI linear fluorescent is the high-CRI option we stock, though it is a T8 lamp and needs T8 fixtures and ballast rather than T5.
8) Is the Sylvania 20908 a low-mercury or eco lamp for a LEED or green-spec job?
It is built with Sylvania's Rare Earth Phosphorous Pentron Ecologic formulation, the Ecologic line being Sylvania's environmentally conscious lamp construction. Spent fluorescent tubes still contain mercury and must be recycled under local hazardous waste rules regardless of the Ecologic designation.
