Generac 6505 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Generac 6505 tank riser fit my Protector series diesel generator?
The 6505 riser is made for Generac 15 kW and 20 kW Protector series diesel generators. It bolts to the bottom of the base fuel tank using the mounting holes already provided in the tank, so no drilling or fabrication is needed on a matching unit. If your Protector diesel is outside the 15 kW to 20 kW range, this is not the riser for it.
2) Why would a generator installation need a tank riser at all?
Two reasons. Some municipalities require the fuel base tank to be elevated off the pad, so the riser is a code item in those jurisdictions. Beyond that, setting a steel base tank directly on a rough concrete or gravel surface traps moisture against the bottom and starts corrosion. The 6505 raises the tank off the ground on steel channels to keep that contact from happening.
3) What is the Generac 6505 actually made of, and will it hold up outdoors under a fuel tank?
It is built from thick steel channel that is powder painted. The paint is the corrosion barrier on the riser itself, and the whole point of the part is to keep standing moisture off the tank bottom underneath a genset sitting outside on a pad.
4) Does the 6505 riser come with the generator, or is it a separate order?
It is a separate accessory. Generac ships the Protector diesel unit with its base tank, and the riser is ordered on its own as part number 6505 when the site or the local authority calls for the tank to be elevated. Plan on adding it to the order alongside the generator rather than expecting it in the crate.
5) How much work is it to install a Generac tank riser during a generator set?
Minimal, provided you do it before the tank is set. The riser channels bolt to the underside of the base tank through holes the tank already has, so it is a bolt-up with no field drilling. Sequence it so the riser goes on while the unit is still on the rigging, not after the genset is down on the pad.
6) I manage several properties with standby diesel gensets. Can I standardize on the 6505 riser across all of them?
Only where the units are Generac Protector series diesels in the 15 kW and 20 kW sizes. The 6505 is matched to those base tanks and their factory mounting hole pattern. Gaseous Protector units and diesel sets outside that kW range take different accessories, so check the nameplate on each unit before buying the same riser for the whole fleet.
