Sta-Kon RA723M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RA723M ring terminal accept?
The RA723M takes 22 to 16 AWG stranded or solid conductor. That is the red insulation color band, which on nylon insulated terminals is the standard code for the 22-16 AWG range, so if you are matching to existing crimps in a panel the red barrel is the visual check. Anything heavier (14-16 AWG and up) needs a blue or yellow bodied terminal instead.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RA723M terminal UL recognized?
Yes. The RA723M carries UL file E9809. For institutional and MRO work where terminations have to be listed components, that file number is what you cite on the submittal.
3) What is the difference between a ring terminal and a fork (spade) terminal for a screw connection?
A ring terminal like the RA723M is a closed ring, so the stud or screw passes through it and the connection cannot vibrate off even if the screw backs out slightly. A fork or spade terminal is open on one side and slides out from under a loosened screw, which is why it is used where a technician needs to drop a wire out fast without removing the screw. For motor controls, grounds, and anything subject to vibration, the closed ring is the right choice; for test points and frequently serviced terminal strips the fork is more convenient.
4) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon RA723M nylon insulated ring terminals?
Use an insulated-terminal crimper sized for the 22-16 AWG red range. The nylon barrel is crimped through the insulation, so a nest matched to the red color code gives the correct compression without cracking the body. An uninsulated-terminal die or pliers will deform the nylon and produce a connection that will not hold pull test.
5) Is the insulation on the Sta-Kon RA723M nylon or vinyl, and does it matter?
Nylon. Nylon insulated barrels handle higher temperatures and resist abrasion and oils better than vinyl, and they do not split as readily when the crimp flares the barrel. If you are terminating inside an enclosure that runs warm or near machinery, nylon is the body you want.
6) Where is the Sta-Kon RA723M terminal made?
The RA723M is manufactured in the United States, which is the detail that matters on government and federally funded jobs with domestic sourcing requirements.
