1) Will the Honeywell T87N1000/U round thermostat run a heat pump?
Yes, on heat pumps with no auxiliary heat, and on 1 heat/1 cool conventional systems. It is a single-stage control, so if your heat pump has auxiliary or emergency electric heat strips you need a multi-stage heat pump thermostat instead. The O and B terminals are present for the reversing valve, so it handles either changeover convention.
2) What wires do I need at the wall for the T87N round thermostat?
The T87N1000/U lands R, Rc, W, Y, G, O and B. It runs on battery assisted power stealing, so a dedicated common wire is not required. Supply is 20 to 30 Vac at 50 or 60 Hz, which is standard low voltage control transformer power.
3) Does the Honeywell round thermostat switch between heat and cool automatically?
No. Changeover is manual on the T87N1000/U. The system switch has HEAT-OFF-COOL positions and the fan switch has AUTO-ON, so somebody has to move it over at the season change. If you need auto changeover for a rental unit or a lobby, pick a different model.
4) Will the T87N cover the hole left by the old round thermostat I am replacing?
The T87N1000/U measures 3-11/16 in. diameter by 1-3/4 in. deep (94 mm by 45 mm). That is the classic Round footprint, so it generally lands over the same wall opening as an older Honeywell Round. If the old unit left paint lines or a larger cutout, order a wallplate cover with it: 50000066-001/U and 50010944-001/U are the listed accessories.
5) Can I use this round thermostat on a millivolt or line voltage system?
No. The T87N1000/U is a low voltage control, 20 to 30 Vac, switching 0.02A to 1.0A running on both the heat and cool circuits. It will not work on 120/240V baseboard heat or on a millivolt wall furnace. Those need a line voltage or millivolt-rated thermostat.
6) Is the T87N round thermostat mercury free?
It is. The classic Honeywell Round is built mercury free and uses a thermistor sensing element with a relay output rather than the old mercury bulb switch. That matters for facilities that ban mercury-containing devices and for disposal rules on the units you pull out.
7) What temperature range does the Honeywell Round T87N set to, and how tight does it hold?
Setpoint range is 40 F to 90 F, which covers freeze protection in a vacant unit through to summer setback. Accuracy is plus or minus 2 F (plus or minus 1 C). Cycle rate is adjustable at 1, 3, 5 or 9 cycles per hour, so you can slow it down for a hydronic or gravity system and speed it up for forced air.
8) Is the Honeywell Round T87N the same as the heat-only T87K?
They are different controls. The T87K heat only works with 2 or 3 wire heat-only systems. The T87N1000/U handles 1 heat/1 cool, with a HEAT-OFF-COOL switch and a G terminal for the fan. If the opening has only two wires and no cooling, the heat-only version is the simpler fit.
9) Will this thermostat hold up in an unconditioned or humid space like a sunroom or garage apartment?
Operating humidity is 5 to 90% RH non-condensing. Damp but not wet is fine; a space that sees condensation on surfaces is outside what the T87N is rated for.
