Thomas & Betts 675AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the Thomas & Betts aluminum Erickson coupling come in, and what are the part numbers?
Two trade sizes: 1/2 inch, ordered as 675AL, and 3/4 inch, ordered as 676AL. Both are aluminum bodies. Match the coupling size to the rigid conduit trade size you are joining, not to the conductor count.
2) Why use an Erickson coupling instead of a standard threaded conduit coupling?
A standard coupling has to be spun onto one conduit end, which means at least one length of pipe must be free to turn. An Erickson (three-piece union) coupling threads onto both fixed conduit ends and is drawn together by the union body, so you can join two rigid conduit runs that are already strapped in place or boxed at both ends. That is the normal fix for a repair, a cut-in, or tying a new run into existing pipe.
3) Will this coupling work on EMT?
No. An Erickson union threads onto conduit ends, so it is for threaded rigid conduit (RMC/IMC) or field-threaded pipe. EMT is thinwall and unthreaded, and needs set-screw or compression couplings instead. If you are joining EMT in a spot where neither pipe can rotate, look for a set-screw type coupling in the matching 1/2 or 3/4 inch trade size.
4) Is an aluminum Erickson coupling okay to use on steel rigid conduit, or should I stick with the same metal?
The 675AL and 676AL are aluminum bodies. Aluminum is chosen where weight and corrosion resistance matter, and it is the standard choice for aluminum rigid conduit runs. On galvanized steel rigid conduit, pairing dissimilar metals in a wet or corrosive location can set up galvanic corrosion, so most electricians keep the coupling metal the same as the conduit in those spots and use a steel union there instead. In dry interior locations it is far less of an issue.
5) Do I need to cut and rethread the conduit to install an Erickson coupling?
Both conduit ends have to be threaded, so a clean factory-threaded end works as-is and a field cut needs to be reamed and threaded before assembly. The union body then pulls the two halves together over the joint. Nothing else is required beyond the coupling itself for the 1/2 inch 675AL or the 3/4 inch 676AL.
6) What kinds of jobs is this Thomas & Betts coupling used on?
Residential, commercial, and industrial conduit work: extending an existing run, tying conduit into a panel, and repair or retrofit work where the pipe cannot be turned. For an MRO or property maintenance stock room, keeping both the 1/2 inch 675AL and 3/4 inch 676AL on the shelf covers the two most common branch-circuit conduit sizes.
