Thomas & Betts 843AL-TB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Which chase nipple size do I order for a 2 inch conduit knockout?
Order by trade size, not by measuring the thread. For a 2 inch knockout the part is 847AL. Chase nipples carry standard rigid conduit threads for their trade size, so a 2 inch nipple threads into a 2 inch hub or takes a 2 inch locknut.
2) Does a locknut come with the Thomas & Betts chase nipple?
The chase nipple is sold as the nipple only, by trade size. A chase nipple is secured with a locknut on the far side of the knockout, so order a matching locknut in the same trade size for each nipple. If the connection needs to be liquid tight or the enclosure is rated, add the appropriate sealing washer as well.
3) What is a chase nipple used for in an electrical install?
A chase nipple joins two enclosures wall to wall, or ties a box to another fitting, where a conduit run is not needed. It threads through the knockout from one side and is held by a locknut on the other, giving a short male threaded connection between the two housings. The Thomas & Betts chase nipple is aluminum and zinc plated, and comes in trade sizes matched to standard knockouts from 3/4 inch up to 4 inch.
4) Is the aluminum chase nipple safe to use on an aluminum or steel enclosure?
Made of aluminum with a zinc plated finish. Aluminum fittings pair naturally with aluminum enclosures and conduit bodies. On galvanized steel boxes the zinc plating helps, but wherever dissimilar metals are in a damp or corrosive location, watch for galvanic action and consider a steel or malleable iron nipple instead.
5) Is a chase nipple the right fitting, or do I need a close nipple or offset nipple?
Use a chase nipple when you are bridging two enclosures that sit flush against each other, or landing into a threaded hub, with a locknut holding it. A close conduit nipple is threaded both ends and needs a locknut on each side, which is what you want when both walls are plain knockouts and you need the nipple to pull them together. An offset nipple is for when the two knockouts do not line up. The Thomas & Betts aluminum chase nipple covers 3/4 inch through 4 inch.
6) Can I standardize on one brand of chase nipple across a facility's panel work?
Yes, and that is the usual approach for MRO stock. The Thomas & Betts aluminum chase nipple runs 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2 and 4 inch under part numbers 843AL-TB, 844AL, 845AL, 847AL, 848AL, 849AL, 850AL and 851AL, so a single line covers most enclosure knockouts a maintenance crew will hit.
