Thomas & Betts CICA-2 1/2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is a Type C conduit body the right choice, or do I need an LB, LL or T body?
A Type C body like the CICA-2 1/2 is a straight-through pull point: both hubs are in line, so it is used to add a pull or splice access on a straight conduit run. If you need to turn the run 90 degrees into a wall use an LB, for a 90 along a wall use an LL or LR, and for a three-way branch use a T body. The C does not change direction.
2) Does the CICA-2 1/2 conduit body come with a cover and gasket?
The CICA-2 1/2 is the body only, supplied one per carton. Covers and gaskets for Type C bodies are ordered separately and must be sized to the 2-1/2 inch body. Order them with the body if the enclosure needs to be closed up, since a bare body is not a complete installation.
3) What is the closest alternative to the Thomas & Betts CICA-2 1/2 Type C conduit body for a run of EMT rather than rigid conduit?
The Thomas & Betts CICA-2 1/2 is a cast aluminum Type C conduit body made for rigid conduit with a 2-1/2 inch hub. For an EMT run, the Crouse-Hinds C15MTC-6 Condulet is also a Type C conduit outlet body but is built as a combination EMT fitting, so it terminates EMT instead of threaded rigid conduit. Choose based on the raceway already in the wall: threaded rigid takes the CICA-2 1/2, EMT takes the combination-EMT Condulet.
4) Is the Thomas & Betts CICA-2 1/2 body suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
The body is cast aluminum, which handles exterior and damp exposure better than painted steel. Keep in mind aluminum should not be used in direct contact with concrete or where it will see chlorides or strong alkalis, and the body only becomes raintight once a cover and gasket are fitted.
5) Does the Thomas & Betts CICA-2 1/2 carry any third-party approval for Canadian work?
CSA is the standard listed for the CICA-2 1/2, which is the approval Canadian inspectors look for on conduit fittings.
6) Is a Crouse-Hinds Condulet Series 5 Type C body a drop-in substitute for a Thomas & Betts CICA-2 1/2?
Not directly. The Crouse-Hinds C15MTC-6 is part of the Condulet Series 5 line and is a combination EMT Type C body, while the Thomas & Betts CICA-2 1/2 is a cast aluminum Type C body with a 2-1/2 inch hub for rigid conduit. The body shape and pull-through function are the same idea, but the conduit termination and trade size differ, and covers and gaskets follow each manufacturer's own series, so plan on matching the cover to whichever body you install.
7) How much space do I need to allow on the wall for the Thomas & Betts CICA-2 1/2?
Allow for a 14 x 10 x 4 inch shipping footprint for the CICA-2 1/2, which gives a working envelope for a 2-1/2 inch body plus cover clearance. Leave room on the cover face so the cover can be removed for pulling wire after the run is strapped.
