The 3/4 inch 3871-SS takes a bonding conductor from 14 AWG up to 4 AWG in its lay-in lug. That covers the usual equipment grounding conductor sizes for small and mid-size feeders, so you can land the bond wire straight into the bushing without a separate lug.
3) Do I need a grounding bushing or will a plain insulated bushing do?
Two different jobs. A plain insulated bushing only protects conductors from the cut edge of the conduit. These T&B units do both: the insulated throat protects the wire and the lug gives you a point to land a bonding jumper, which is what you want at concentric or eccentric knockouts, at oversized knockouts, and on service raceways where the locknut alone is not accepted as the bonding path.
4) Why choose the stainless steel hardware version of this grounding bushing?
The SS suffix on these T&B bushings means the lug screw and saddle hardware are stainless steel, which holds up better than plated steel in damp, washdown, coastal or corrosive areas. The bushing body itself is aluminum. If the conduit run is in a clean dry interior, the standard hardware version does the same electrical job.
5) Will a T&B insulated grounding bushing thread onto EMT?
No. These thread onto the male threads of rigid metal conduit or IMC, or onto a threaded hub or nipple. EMT has no threads, so on an EMT run you would bond at the connector instead, using a grounding-type EMT connector or a bonding locknut.
6) Is a bonding jumper included with the 3871-SS bushing?
No conductor comes with it. The bushing supplies the threaded body, insulated throat and the stainless lug hardware; you supply the bonding jumper, sized 14 through 4 AWG to suit the lug, plus the locknut on the inside of the enclosure.
7) Can I standardize one part number across a whole panel and feeder install?
You can standardize on the family, not a single number. The bushing is sized to the conduit, so a typical panel job mixes 3/4 and 1 inch on branch raceways (3871-SS, 3872-SS) with 2, 3 or 4 inch on the feeders and service (3875-SS, 3877-SS, 3879-SS). All carry the same aluminum body and stainless hardware, so the corrosion spec stays consistent across the job.
