Thomas & Betts 5232 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the Thomas & Betts liquid-tight straight connector come in?
Two trade sizes: 1/2 inch (part number 5232) and 3/4 inch (part number 5233). Order by the trade size of the liquid-tight flexible conduit you are terminating, not by the wire fill, so 3/4 inch LFMC takes the 5233.
2) Can I use this connector on a motor or washdown equipment in a wet area?
That is what it is for. The straight steel liquid-tight connector seals the conduit entry against moisture, so it suits motor terminations, control panels, food-processing washdown areas, and outdoor conduit runs exposed to weather.
3) Will this fit standard liquid-tight flexible metal conduit, or do I need a different fitting for EMT?
It is made for liquid-tight flexible conduit only, in 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch. EMT, rigid, and flex (Greenfield) all use different fittings; don't try to terminate them with this one.
4) Is this connector steel or die-cast zinc?
Steel. Thomas & Betts built the 5232 and 5233 straight liquid-tight connectors from steel for mechanical strength in industrial and commercial runs where the fitting can take a knock.
5) Straight versus 45 or 90 degree liquid-tight connector, which do I need?
The 5232 and 5233 are straight-body connectors, meant for a direct in-line entry into a box or enclosure. If the conduit has to turn immediately at the enclosure wall because of clearance behind the box, you want an angle connector instead; forcing a tight bend on the conduit at a straight fitting stresses the jacket and the seal.
6) What is the right way to land this connector so the seal actually holds?
Cut the conduit square and deburr the end first. Seat the conduit fully into the connector body, then tighten the gland so the sealing ring compresses on the jacket. Check the seal before energizing. A conduit cut on an angle or left with a burr is the usual reason a liquid-tight termination leaks.
7) I'm standardizing fittings across a facility, can I order both 1/2 and 3/4 inch of the same Thomas & Betts connector?
Yes. The same straight steel liquid-tight body is offered as 5232 for 1/2 inch and 5233 for 3/4 inch, so an MRO crib can stock both sizes of one fitting family and keep installation practice identical across openings and equipment.
