1) Is the LR Series conduit body aluminum or iron, and can I use it on a run of rigid aluminum conduit?
Sand cast aluminum. That makes it the matching body for aluminum rigid conduit runs, and it avoids the galvanic pairing you get when you bolt aluminum fittings onto ferrous raceway. If your run is galvanized rigid or IMC, most electrical inspectors and engineers want the iron-alloy version of the same L-body instead, so specify by the raceway metal you are actually installing.
2) What trade sizes does the Thomas & Betts LR Series conduit body come in?
Six trade sizes: 1/2 inch (LR17SA), 3/4 inch (LR27SA), 1 inch (LR37SA), 1-1/4 inch (LR47SA), 1-1/2 inch (LR57SA) and 2 inch (LR67SA). Match the size to the conduit hubs on both ends of the run, an LR body is the same size on both openings.
3) How do I know whether I need an LR or an LL when the conduit comes out of the wall and turns?
Stand where you will service it, facing the cover. If the run has to continue to your right, use the LR; if it continues to your left, use the LL. Field crews get this wrong by orienting off the conduit instead of the cover. The Thomas & Betts LR is the right-hand version and is stocked in 1/2 inch through 2 inch, so once you have the direction settled you only need the trade size.
