Ocal C27-G – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a Type C conduit body used for instead of an LB or LL?
A Type C body is a straight-through pull and splice point: both hubs are in line with the run, so it gives you access in the middle of a straight conduit length without changing direction. An LB, LL or LR turns the run 90 degrees. If you need a pull point on a straight run, the C27-G is the right shape; if you are coming off a wall or turning a corner, you want an L-body instead.
2) Why specify a PVC-coated conduit body instead of a plain galvanized one?
In wastewater plants, chemical processing, coastal sites and other wet or corrosive atmospheres, uncoated fittings corrode at the threads and covers first and seize up. The Ocal C27-G carries a PVC coating over the body for resistance to moisture, chemicals and corrosive atmospheres, which is why it gets specified in those environments. On dry interior commercial work a standard uncoated body is normally all that is called for.
3) Does the Ocal C27-G come with a cover and gasket?
The C27-G is the conduit body itself. It uses a removable cover for access to the wiring, and covers and gaskets for PVC-coated bodies are ordered as separate items so the coating and sealing match the body. If you are building out a corrosion-resistant run, budget the matching 3/4 inch PVC-coated cover and gasket alongside the body.
4) Can I use the C27-G as a splice box for my pull wires?
It gives you interior access at a point in the run for wire pulling and splicing without breaking down the whole conduit system. Whether you may splice inside it depends on the body's cubic-inch capacity versus your conductor count and local code, so size the conductors to the body before planning splices in it. For pulling only, a 3/4 inch C body is a standard access point on a straight run.
