Thomas & Betts SSCR Coupling

The Thomas & Betts SSCR coupling is offered in eight trade sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch. Part numbers run 8124 (1/2"), 8224 (3/4"), 8324-TB (1"), 8424 (1-1/4"), 8524 (1-1/2"), 8624 (2"), 8824-TB (3") and 8974 (4"). Order by trade size of the conduit you are joining, not by the conduit's outside diameter.

Set screw couplings like the SSCR are the standard way to join two lengths of EMT in dry indoor locations. You slide the coupling over the tube ends and tighten the set screws down onto the conduit, so no threading and no compression rings are involved. Where the run is exposed to damp, wet or outdoor conditions, use a raintight compression coupling instead, because set screw fittings are not raintight.

No threading required. The SSCR is a set screw fitting, so it clamps onto plain-cut EMT ends. Ream the cut ends, butt them inside the coupling body, and tighten the set screws evenly on each side. For threaded rigid or IMC you need a threaded coupling instead.

One size per part. Each SSCR coupling is made for a single trade size, so a 3/4 inch run takes the 8224 and a 2 inch run takes the 8624. There is no reducing or adjustable version here. If you are changing size mid-run, you need a reducing fitting or a box, not this coupling.

Just a flat blade screwdriver or nut driver for the set screws, plus a reamer or file to clean the cut conduit ends. No dies, no threading, no crimping tool. Larger sizes such as the 3 inch 8824-TB and 4 inch 8974 carry more set screws, so allow time to tighten each one down evenly.
