Metallics TRS106SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is this threaded rod stainless steel or zinc plated?
Stainless steel. The SS suffix on TRS106SS is the stainless designation, which is what you want for exterior runs, wash-down areas, pool and natatorium spaces, coastal sites, and anywhere a plated rod would rust out. For dry interior hanging, plated carbon rod is the usual cheaper choice.
2) Can I cut a 6 foot threaded rod down for shorter hanger drops?
Yes, 6 foot stock is normally bought to be cut to length. Cut the 5/8-11 rod with a bandsaw, chop saw or cut-off wheel, then chase the end thread or file the burr so a nut will start. Use a stainless-friendly blade and keep the heat down if you want the corrosion resistance at the cut face to hold up.
3) Does the Metallics TRS106SS threaded rod come with nuts and washers?
No. The TRS106SS is bare 5/8-11 rod only. You order your 5/8-11 nuts, flat washers, rod couplings, strut nuts or beam clamps separately, and for a stainless installation keep that hardware stainless too so you are not mixing metals on an exposed run.
4) What will a 5/8-11 threaded rod hang in a commercial job?
Five-eighths is the heavy end of trapeze and hanger work: large conduit racks, cable tray trapezes, big ductwork, rooftop and suspended mechanical equipment, and strut trapezes carrying multiple runs. For single small conduit or a sprinkler drop, 3/8-16 or 1/2-13 rod is the normal size and far easier to handle.
5) Is the TRS106SS sold as a single rod or in a bundle?
It is packaged as a bundle of 5/8-11 x 6 ft stainless rod. If you need a specific piece count for a takeoff, confirm the bundle quantity before you build the order rather than assuming one rod.
6) Will stainless threaded rod gall when I run the nuts on?
Stainless on stainless can gall, and a 5/8-11 coarse thread under load is a common place to see it. Run nuts on clean, keep the speed down with an impact, and use an anti-seize on threads you expect to take apart later. Coarse 11 TPI helps, since it tolerates jobsite dirt better than a fine thread would.
