Topaz Lighting 432 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use this Topaz elbow connector with rigid or IMC conduit?
No. The 431/432 elbow is built for EMT only, with a compression-style body that grips the outside of thinwall tubing. Rigid and IMC are threaded and need a threaded fitting instead.
2) Is a compression EMT fitting OK outdoors or in a damp location?
The Topaz 431 compression 90 degree EMT elbow is UL Listed and rated for indoor and outdoor use, and it is concrete tight when taped. Compression fittings are the ones you want outdoors; setscrew EMT connectors are dry-location only.
3) What is this 90 degree EMT elbow connector actually for, versus just bending the conduit?
It terminates EMT into a steel outlet box or enclosure where the run has to turn 90 degrees right at the box and there is no room to bend the pipe into it. The large-radius body keeps the pull easy instead of fighting a tight field bend against the can.
4) Will this elbow be concrete tight for a slab pour?
It is rated concrete tight when taped, so the joint has to be taped at the pour to qualify. Untaped, do not count on it for a slab. For a wet or buried location that also needs to be raintight, the compression body is the right connection type for EMT.
5) Is the Topaz 431 body steel or die-cast, and does that matter for corrosion?
Zinc die-cast, which is why it carries the outdoor rating. It is not a steel compression connector, so for a corrosive process area or a coastal exterior run check what your spec calls out on fitting material before you standardize on it.
6) Do I need a separate locknut or bushing to land this on a knockout?
Land it on a steel box or enclosure knockout the same way as any EMT connector. The elbow is sold as the fitting itself, in 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch, so order the box, any needed locknut, and the EMT separately as part of the same job.
