TOTO THP4991 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is TOTO part THP4991?
THP4991 is a TOTO escutcheon with gasket for a pressure balance valve trim. The escutcheon is the decorative plate that covers the wall opening around the valve, and the gasket behind it seals the plate to the finished wall surface. It is a replacement part, not a complete valve or trim kit.
2) Is TOTO THP4991 a complete shower valve or just the cover plate?
Just the cover plate and its gasket. THP4991 supplies the escutcheon and gasket for a TOTO pressure balance valve, so it will not give you a handle, cartridge, or valve body. If the valve itself is leaking or not balancing temperature, the escutcheon is not the part that fixes it.
3) Will the TOTO THP4991 escutcheon fit any TOTO shower valve?
It is specific to TOTO pressure balance valve trim. Escutcheon plates are cut and gasketed to the particular valve family they cover, so a thermostatic or volume-control TOTO valve takes a different plate. Match the THP4991 number to the pressure balance trim you already have rather than ordering by appearance.
4) Does the TOTO THP4991 come with the gasket, or do I order that separately?
The gasket is included. THP4991 ships as the escutcheon with its gasket, which is the piece that keeps shower water from running behind the plate and into the wall cavity. You do not need a separate seal, though a bead of sealant at the top perimeter is common practice on a tiled wall.
5) Do I need to shut off the water to replace a shower escutcheon like the TOTO THP4991?
Replacing the escutcheon and gasket does not open the water line. The plate sits on the wall face over the valve, so you remove the handle and trim sleeve, swap the plate and gasket, and reassemble. Shutting off the supply is still the safe practice if you have to disturb the cartridge or stem to get the trim off.
6) Is TOTO THP4991 available in more than one finish?
THP4991 is ordered as a single part reference. For a property manager matching existing trim across units, the part number itself is the identifier to specify when you want the plate to match the pressure balance trim already on the wall.
