The less bottom rod (LBR) version drops the bottom rod and bottom latch, which keeps the rod out of the floor track where dirt, snowmelt, and carts tear it up, and it clears the threshold on doors where floor strike prep isn't wanted. LBR gives up the bottom latch point, so on a pair of doors you lose some resistance to forcing at the bottom. High-traffic entries and openings over carpet or drains usually go LBR; secure exterior pairs usually keep both rods.

Yes. Being a surface vertical rod device, the ED8927 latches at the head and the sill rather than into a strike at the jamb edge, so a pair of doors can be fitted with a device on each leaf and no center mullion. If you'd rather keep a mullion and use rim devices, that is a different device type entirely.

Wood doors are covered. The ED8927 is listed as wood door compatible, alongside standard hollow metal and aluminum applications, provided the stile is at least 4-3/4 inches wide. Compare that with the Von Duprin 7527 and 7827, which are not wood door compatible.

The one limitation for institutional use: it is not fire rated, so keep it off labeled openings.

Sargent's 2727 is a Grade 1 fire rated reversible wide stile surface vertical rod device. The TownSteel ED8927 carries UL/cUL listing under UL 305 for panic hardware and is not fire rated, so it belongs on non-rated egress openings.

The ED8927 is a wide stile device with a 4-3/4 inch minimum stile width, so a typical narrow stile storefront will not take it. For narrow stile openings, the Von Duprin 3327A-3ft and 7527-3ft are Grade 1 narrow stile surface vertical rod devices for 36 inch, 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ED4400 and Falcon 19-V-EO are narrow stile Grade 1 alternatives at 36 inches.

Handing is not a concern here. Every device in the TownSteel 8900 Series is non-handed or reversible, so the same part works on a left or right hand door. Locksmiths stocking these only need to decide on size, finish, and whether they want the bottom rod.

Four finishes are offered: 622 flat black, 630 satin stainless steel, 689 aluminum, and 695 duro. 630 is the usual pick to match satin stainless pulls and hinges, 689 for clear anodized aluminum storefront, and 622 for black storefront packages. All four are available with or without the bottom rod.

Two to watch. The Sargent 12-8710 is a dummy function device, so it provides no latching or egress operation and cannot stand in for a working panic device. The ED8927 is a wide stile device with a 4-3/4 inch minimum stile and a non-handed reversible mechanism.
