Single dummy means no latching and no locking. The MSE-W dummy is a fixed lever on a wide escutcheon plate, used as a pull on an inactive leaf or a closet door. It is non-keyed, with no key cylinder and no working lock function. If you need the door to stay shut, order a passage or latching mortise function instead.
2) Why do I have to pick a hand on a dummy mortise lever if it doesn't latch?
Handing is a required selection on the MSE-W: LH, RH, LHR, or RHR. Even on a dummy, the lever has to point the correct way and the escutcheon plate is oriented to the leaf, so the hand you order is the hand you get. Stand outside the opening: if the hinges are on your left it is left hand, and if that door swings away from you it is LH, toward you it is LHR.
