Progress Lighting P8525-31 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Progress Lighting P8525-31 photo cell mount? Does it need its own junction box?
The P8525-31 photo cell is a plug-in accessory that snaps directly onto a compatible transformer, so there is no separate box to set. Mounting type is listed as plugin on transformers, and no outlet box mounting hardware is included because none is needed. It arrives prewired, so you are plugging it in rather than splicing it.
2) Will a 15A 120V photo cell handle my landscape lighting transformer load?
The P8525-31 is rated 15 amps at 120 volts, which is the line-side rating. It switches the 120V input to the transformer, so size it against the transformer's primary draw, not the low-voltage secondary load. On a standard 120V 15A branch circuit it covers the full circuit capacity.
3) Can I use this Progress photo cell on a 277V commercial lighting circuit?
No. The P8525-31 is a 120V device only. For a 277V circuit you need a photocontrol rated for that voltage; wiring this one to 277V is outside its rating.
4) Will this Progress photo cell plug into any brand of landscape transformer?
The P8525-31 is specified for plug-in mounting on compatible transformers, meaning a transformer with the matching photo cell receptacle. It is not a universal twist-lock photocontrol and there is no stated fit to other manufacturers' transformers. Match it to a transformer that lists a Progress plug-in photo cell port.
5) Is the P8525-31 photo cell suitable for outdoor, coastal, or wet-location exposure?
It is built for outdoor use, with a stainless steel body and a black painted finish for corrosion resistance. Progress lists the category as outdoor and the mount location as wall. It is UL listed.
6) How much room do I need to clear around the transformer for this photo cell?
Allow for a unit 3.75 inches high and 1.375 inches in diameter. Progress also specifies it cannot be mounted up or down interchangeably, so it has a fixed orientation once plugged into the transformer. Keep the sensor face unobstructed and out of the path of fixture light.
7) Does the Progress P8525-31 photo cell include a timer or dusk-to-dawn function?
It is a photo cell only, not a timer and not listed as a dusk-to-dawn package. It senses ambient light to control the transformer output. If your spec calls for timed hours after sunset, you need a transformer with a built-in astronomic timer or a separate time clock.
8) Does this photo cell meet California Title 24 lighting control requirements?
Progress lists the P8525-31 as Title 20 compliant. Title 24 is listed as No, and Title 22 as No. It also carries no Energy Star certification, no JA8 listing, and no Dark Sky designation, so do not count it toward a Title 24 control credit.
9) If I'm buying photo cells for a whole apartment property, how do they come packed?
Carton quantity is 4 each, so photo cells ship four to a box. Each unit weighs 1 pound, 1 pound gross with packaging. Model number to order is P8525-31 if you are standardizing across multiple transformers.
How fast can I get the Progress Lighting P8525-31 delivered?
