Trimco TRI-1581A-RH.626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset and strike does the Trimco 1581A push/pull latchset use?
The 1581A comes standard with a 5 inch backset and a 2-3/4 inch T-strike. That 5 inch backset is deeper than a normal 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch tubular lock backset, so an existing door bored for a standard lockset will need new prep. If you are replacing an existing Trimco 1500 Series hospital latch you are already on the 5 inch dimension.
2) Do I have to order the Trimco 1581A left hand or right hand, or can it be changed in the field?
You pick a hand when ordering (left hand and right hand are both offered), but the hand is not locked in. The 1500 Series base assembly is reversible, so hand and function can both be changed in the field without swapping the unit. For a maintenance shop that means one latch on the shelf covers openings of either hand.
3) Will a push/pull hospital latch meet ADA for a patient room or restroom door?
Yes. The 1581A meets ADA requirements, which is the point of a paddle latch: it operates with a forearm, elbow, hip or a closed fist, with no tight grasping, pinching, or wrist twisting. That is why these go on patient rooms, exam rooms, and assisted living doors where staff are carrying trays or linens.
4) I need a latch for a patient bathroom door that has to lock from the inside - is the Trimco 1581A the right part?
No. The Trimco 1581A is a push/pull latchset with lever pads, standard 5 inch backset and 2-3/4 inch T-strike, and its hand and function are field reversible, but the push/pull action is a passage-style operation, not a privacy lock. For a bed or bath door that has to secure from the occupant side, the Pemko PDLAA is a privacy door latch in a privacy/bed/bath function, with UL fire door classification and ADA compliance. Use the 1581A on the corridor and patient room doors that need hands-free operation, and the PDLAA on the bathroom door itself.
5) What is the difference between the Trimco 1581A push/pull latchset and the Pemko PDLAA privacy door latch?
They solve different openings. The Trimco 1581A is a push/pull latchset operated by lever pads - push the lever down, pull the lever up - built on a cold-forged steel base that is field reversible for hand and function, listed by Underwriters Laboratories, approved for use by the Veterans Administration, and meeting ADA requirements. The Pemko PDLAA is a privacy door latch, a privacy/bed/bath function with UL fire door classification and ADA compliance. Choose the 1581A where the door has to open hands-free or elbow-operated, as in assisted living, healthcare and hospitality corridors; choose the PDLAA where the opening needs a privacy function at a bed or bath door.
6) What is the difference between the Trimco 1581A and the 1580A or 1563A push/pull latches?
All three are Trimco 1500 Series hospital latches sharing the same cold forged steel base. They differ in the paddle arrangement and function you order. The 1581A is set up push lever down, pull lever up. If you want the opposite paddle combination or a different function, that is what the sibling 1580A and 1563A cover. Since the base is reversible, the hand is not what separates them.
7) Is there a push/pull latch finish that helps with infection control on healthcare doors?
Order the 710CU Healthy Hardware Steralloy Silver. Trimco makes the lever pads and latch covers of the 1500 Series in bronze, brass, or antimicrobial copper, and 710CU is the antimicrobial copper option. The other two choices, 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless steel, are the standard commercial finishes with no antimicrobial claim.
8) How far does the Trimco 1581A paddle stick out into the corridor?
Projection is under half that of other push/pull latches. On a tight corridor or a door that swings near a wall or a wheelchair path, that compact profile is the reason to pick this one over a bulkier paddle latch. Trimco publishes the exact projection dimension on the 1500 Series Hospital Latches cutsheet.
9) Is the Trimco 1581A UL listed, and is it accepted on VA projects?
The 1500 Series push/pull latches are listed by Underwriters Laboratories and approved for use by the Veterans Administration. That combination is why they specify into government and military facilities, assisted living, and hospitality as well as healthcare.
10) Can I get a push/pull latch with a mortise lock instead of a tubular one, or with engraving?
Yes. The 1500 Series is ordered with options for multiple functions, tubular or mortise locks, engraving, Torx security screws, and different paddle up/down combinations. So if the opening needs a mortise chassis, or the facility wants Torx heads to discourage tampering, or room designations engraved into the pads, those are specified at order rather than sourced separately.
11) Both the Trimco 1581A and the Pemko PDLAA are described as ADA compliant - does that make them interchangeable on a barrier-free opening?
ADA compliance is common to both, but it does not make them the same part. The Trimco 1581A meets ADA requirements and is operated by thick bronze, brass or antimicrobial copper lever pads sized for heavy duty use, with a nylon insert in the latchbolt face for silent action and a projection less than half that of other push/pull latches. The Pemko PDLAA carries ADA compliance along with UL fire door classification and a privacy/bed/bath function. If the opening also has to be secured from inside, the ADA rating on the 1581A does not cover that requirement and the privacy function on the PDLAA does; if the opening has to be operable with a forearm or a closed fist, the 1581A lever pads are the form that does it.
12) Can I standardize one latch across an assisted living building, or do I need more than one part number?
Plan on two. The Trimco 1581A push/pull latchset is the part for the doors staff and residents move through with full hands - it is UL listed, Veterans Administration approved, ADA compliant, and reversible in the field so one stocked part covers both hands and multiple functions, which is exactly what keeps the part count down across assisted living, government and military facilities, hospitality, multifamily and office buildings. It is also offered in a Healthy Hardware antimicrobial copper finish, Steralloy Silver 710CU, alongside satin chrome 626 and satin stainless 630. The resident bathroom doors still need a privacy function, and the Pemko PDLAA privacy door latch covers that in a privacy/bed/bath function with UL fire door classification and ADA compliance.
13) Are the paddles on this hospital latch strong enough for a hospital corridor that gets abused?
The lever pads are thicker and heavier than other units, on a cold forged steel base, and the pads and latch covers are bronze, brass or antimicrobial copper rated for heavy duty use. Trimco calls out handles not breaking under abuse. A nylon insert in the latchbolt face keeps the latch quiet and cuts friction, which matters on a night ward.
14) Is the Trimco 1581A push/pull latch meant for commercial doors or will it work in a house?
This is commercial door hardware. It is built and finished for assisted living, government and military facilities, hospitality, multifamily and mixed use, and office buildings, in 626, 630, and 710CU architectural finishes rather than residential decorative ones. On a residential door it would work mechanically but the 5 inch backset prep and paddle look are institutional.
