Trimco 771BLACK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Trimco 771 decal for, and where does it get installed?
The Trimco 771 is an adhesive decal reading "This Door To Remain Unlocked While Building Is Occupied." It goes on the egress door itself, next to the exit hardware, where a door is allowed to be locked when the building is empty but must stay unlocked whenever people are inside. Trimco states the sign meets IBC requirements. It is a commercial-duty sign, used in commercial and industrial buildings, government and military facilities, hospitality, multifamily and mixed-use, and retail.
2) Do I need the "remain unlocked while building is occupied" sign if my exit door has electrified or key-locking hardware?
That sign is what pairs with a door whose locking is permitted only while the building is unoccupied, and the Trimco 771 carries exactly that legend to meet IBC requirements. If your egress door has hardware that can be locked from the egress side under those conditions, the sign belongs on the door. If the door is always free-egress with no lockable egress-side function, the requirement that drives this sign doesn't apply.
3) Is the Trimco 771 a decal or a rigid sign plate?
It's a decal, not a plate. That matters for install: there is no drilling, no fasteners, and no door prep, so it can go on a hollow metal, wood, or aluminum door and on a glass light without cutting anything. If the inspector or your spec calls for a mechanically fastened sign, the 771 decal is not that product.
4) What color is the Trimco 771 "remain unlocked" sign, and can I get different lettering?
Standard is black lettering on a silver background, and that's the version ordered as model 771BLACK. Trimco also offers the 771 customized for other applications, so if you need a different color scheme to match signage elsewhere in the building, it can be built that way rather than bought off the shelf.
5) Which model do I order for the standard black-on-silver Trimco 771 sign?
Order model 771BLACK. That's the standard build of the 771 decal, black lettering on a silver background, with the "This Door To Remain Unlocked While Building Is Occupied" legend already printed. Anything other than that color scheme is a custom order.
6) Can I standardize the Trimco 771 sign across every exit door in a building?
Yes, that's the normal way it's bought. The 771 ships as a single standard model, 771BLACK, black on silver, so every opening gets an identical sign with no handing, no size selection, and no per-door prep to coordinate. For facilities that already use a different color standard across their signage, Trimco will build the 771 custom to match.
