1) Will the Generac 7109 two wire start kit work with a Nexus controller?
No. The 7109 two wire start kit does not work with Nexus controllers. It works on air cooled units and brands running Evolution or Sync 2.0 (Honeywell) controllers, plus Powerpact units. If the generator has a Nexus board, this kit is the wrong part.
2) Can I keep my existing transfer switch instead of buying a Generac one?
That is what the 7109 kit is for. It lets a Generac generator start from another brand's transfer switch using a two wire start signal, so an existing switch already in the building can stay in place rather than being replaced. For a property manager or an electrical contractor doing a generator swap on an occupied building, that keeps the switch, the feeders and the enclosure work out of the job.
3) What is a two wire start kit on a standby generator, and when do I need one?
Two wire start is the simplest generator start signal: the transfer switch closes a dry contact across two wires and the generator runs until the contact opens. Most non-Generac transfer switches and ATS controllers speak that language. Generac's own switches do not, so the 7109 kit is what you add when the switch initiating the start is not a Generac switch. If you are pairing a Generac air cooled unit with a Generac switch, you do not need this kit.
4) Does the Generac 7109 kit work on liquid cooled generators, or only air cooled?
Air cooled units are what the 7109 covers, along with Powerpact models, on Evolution or Sync 2.0 controllers. For a liquid cooled standby set, this is not the kit to order.
