Klein Tools VDV812-606 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will these Klein F compression connectors work on RG6 quad shield cable?
Yes. The Klein VDV812 F connectors are made for RG6 and RG6 quad shield, and the universal sleeve is built to take the diameter variations within the RG6/6Q series, including multi-shield and plenum-jacketed cable that jams a standard sleeve.
2) Can I use these coax connectors outdoors or in a ground block on the side of the house?
No. These are indoor-rated only, with a dark nickel-plated finish over solid brass for corrosion resistance in interior work. For an exterior drop, ground block, or pedestal, use a weather-sealed outdoor-rated F compression connector instead.
3) Do I need a special compression tool for the Klein VDV812 F connectors?
They are compression-style F connectors, so they need a coax compression tool, not a hex crimper or a twist-on. No tool is included with the connectors themselves. Any universal F compression tool that handles standard-length RG6 connectors will seat them.
4) What are the viewing windows on these connectors actually for?
They let you confirm the cable is fully seated before you compress. You look through the window in the sleeve and check that the dielectric and braid have reached the right depth, which catches the short-seated connection that would otherwise show up later as a signal complaint or a callback.
5) What pack sizes do the Klein universal F compression connectors come in?
Two: a 10-pack (VDV812-606) for service calls and punch-list work, and a 50-pack (VDV812-612) for larger rough-ins and multi-unit wiring. Same connector in both.
6) Are these the right connectors for a hotel or apartment coax retrofit where crews are terminating hundreds of drops?
They suit that work well. The universal sleeve is built to install up to five times faster than a standard coax compression connector, the 50-pack keeps a crew supplied, and the yellow/nickel sleeve makes a seated connector easy to spot on inspection. Keep them to interior runs, since they are not rated for outdoor use.
7) What are these Klein connectors made of, and will the plating hold up in a plant room?
Solid brass body with a dark nickel-plated finish. Brass gives the mechanical holding power on the jacket and the nickel plating resists corrosion in indoor environments. It is an indoor finish, so a damp or exterior location calls for a sealed outdoor connector.
