1) Do I have to strip the wires before crimping a UY2 jellybean connector?
No stripping. The UY2 is an insulation displacement connector, so you push the unstripped conductors fully into the barrel and crimp, and the internal contact cuts through the insulation to make the connection. Fully seating the wire before you crimp is the part people get wrong.
2) Will a UY2 work on stranded wire or on 22 AWG stranded alarm cable?
It is specified for solid copper conductors only, 26 to 19 AWG. Stranded conductors can splay under the IDC blade instead of being pierced cleanly, so for stranded cable pick a connector rated for it rather than the UY2.
3) What tool crimps the IDEAL 86-955 UY2 connector?
IDEAL calls for the 33-719 crimp tool or an equivalent. A plain pair of pliers will not close the IDC contact evenly and is the usual cause of an intermittent splice. The crimper is a separate purchase, not packed with the connectors.
4) Can UY2 connectors be used in a damp location like an outdoor pedestal or a basement?
The UY2 is filled with an internal moisture sealant, so the splice is protected against moisture ingress once crimped. That is what makes it the common choice for telephone and alarm splices in pedestals, crawl spaces, and other damp spots rather than a dry-only twist connector.
5) How many wires does the yellow UY2 splice hold, and what do I use for three wires?
The UY2 is a 2-wire butt splice: one conductor in from each side, no more. For joining three conductors or for tapping a run without cutting it, you need a 3-wire jellybean such as the IDEAL UR2 (red) rather than the yellow UY2.
