Von Duprin 472U US19 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Von Duprin 472U top strike actually do on a vertical rod exit device?
The 472U is the top strike, the piece that mounts at the head of the opening and receives the top latch of a vertical rod exit device. Without it the top rod has nothing to latch into, so the device only secures at the bottom. It is sold as a replacement or service part for existing Von Duprin vertical rod assemblies.
2) Will the 472U strike work on a hollow metal frame?
No. The 472U (5547WDC) is the wood frame version, built for wood frame door assemblies with a 1-3/4 inch door. If your opening is hollow metal, you need the metal frame top strike instead, not this one.
3) What finishes does the 472U top strike come in?
Seven: 26D satin chrome, US26 bright chrome, US3 bright brass, US4 satin brass, US10 satin bronze, US10B oil rubbed bronze, and US19 flat black. If you are matching a strike to exit devices already hung in a building, pick the finish code off the existing device rather than matching by eye, since satin and bright chrome read similarly at a distance.
4) Is the 472U handed? Do I need to know left or right hand to order it?
No handing to specify. The 472U ships in a single standard configuration (5547WDC), so the only choice on the order is finish.
5) My top latch is not catching at the head. Do I need a new exit device or just the strike?
Often just the strike. On a vertical rod device the top strike takes the abuse every time the door slams, and a worn, bent, or previously removed strike is a common reason the top latch stops holding. The 472U is the service part for that repair on 1-3/4 inch doors in wood frames, and it is far less work than replacing the whole device.
6) Is the 472U strike the same across a building's openings, or do I have to order per door?
For a property manager standardizing service stock, the deciding factors are door thickness and frame material. Every 1-3/4 inch door in a wood frame running a Von Duprin vertical rod device takes the same 472U strike, so one part number covers that whole group. Openings in metal frames are a different strike and need to be counted separately.
