1) Will the Von Duprin 88-4FT fit a standard 1-3/4 inch hollow metal door?
That is exactly the opening it is built for. The 88 Series rim device is a 1-3/4 inch door device, and it mounts on stock hollow metal doors prepped with 86 or 161 cutouts, so a standard commercial leaf needs no special prep. The bar itself is 48 inches, so the leaf has to be wide enough to carry a 4 ft crossbar.
