Von Duprin 964285 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Von Duprin 964285 and what does it do inside the exit device?
The 964285 is a retaining ring, a small OEM replacement component that holds an assembly together inside Von Duprin 991K-DT, 991K-NL, 991K-BE and 992L trim. It isn't a lock, a latch, or a trim plate. If a device has come apart or a service tech has pulled the trim and found the ring damaged or missing, this is the piece that puts the assembly back to its original build.
2) Will the Von Duprin 964285 retaining ring fit my 99 or 98 series rim exit device?
The 964285 ring is matched to the 991K-DT, 991K-NL, 991K-BE and 992L trim, not to the exit device chassis itself. Those are the outside trims that hang on 98/99 series devices, so the ring belongs to the trim you have mounted on the pull side, not the push bar. Identify the trim by its own number stamped or documented as 991K or 992L before ordering, because a 99 chassis can carry other trim families that use different parts.
3) My Von Duprin 991K night latch trim is loose on the door. Do I need a whole new trim?
Not necessarily. On 991K-NL trim, a failed retaining ring lets the assembly work loose, and the 964285 is the ring for that trim family (991K-DT, 991K-NL, 991K-BE and 992L). Replacing the ring restores assembly integrity without buying the complete trim. If the trim casting itself is cracked or the mounting posts are stripped, the ring won't fix it and the trim needs replacing.
4) Is the 964285 a genuine Von Duprin part or an aftermarket copy?
It's the Von Duprin factory part, model 964285, sold as a replacement component for the 991K/992L trim family. For a facility standardized on Von Duprin, that matters: an OEM ring keeps the trim assembly to the manufacturer's original build rather than substituting a generic snap ring of uncertain fit.
5) Do I need to order anything else with the 964285 to service a 991K or 992L trim?
The 964285 covers the retaining ring only. Whether you need more depends on what failed: a ring alone gets a loose trim back together, but a broken spindle, a damaged lever, or a cylinder problem are separate parts within the same 991K/992L trim family. Pull the trim first and confirm the ring is the failed piece before you order it as a one-item fix.
6) Is the 964285 retaining ring rated for a high traffic commercial opening?
Heavy Duty, and commercial rather than residential. That's the classification a school, hospital or office building opening needs on a part that lives inside an exit trim cycled hundreds of times a day.
7) Does the 964285 come in different sizes or finishes?
One part number only, 964285. There is no size, hand or finish choice to make. It's an internal component, so nothing about it shows on the face of the door and it works with any finish of 991K or 992L trim.
8) Should property maintenance stock the Von Duprin 964285 as a spare?
It's worth keeping on the shelf if your buildings run 991K or 992L trim on Von Duprin exit devices. Small internal parts like a retaining ring are what strand a door out of service, and a Heavy Duty commercial component costs a lot less to hold than a service call with the wrong part in the van.
