Metallics JMLWX04 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the JMLWX04 washer zinc plated for damp or outdoor panel work?
It's zinc plated steel. Zinc plating handles indoor panel, enclosure and general electrical work fine, and tolerates incidental damp, but it isn't stainless, so for continuous wet or corrosive exposure use a stainless fastener instead.
2) How many M4 tooth lock washers come in a jar of Metallics JMLWX04?
100 pieces per jar. The jar pack is what service techs and electricians usually want on the truck, since the washers stay contained instead of loose in a tray.
3) What does an external tooth lock washer do that a flat washer won't?
The teeth on the JMLWX04 bite into the joint surface and the underside of the fastener head, resisting loosening from vibration. A flat washer only spreads load. For M4 terminal screws, ground screws and panel hardware that sees vibration, the tooth washer is the one that keeps the connection tight; if you need load spreading over soft or oversized holes, add a flat washer as well.
4) Can I use the Metallics M4 tooth lock washer on a grounding connection?
External tooth washers are commonly used under M4 ground and bonding screws because the teeth cut through plating and paint to help maintain metal-to-metal contact. The JMLWX04 is a zinc plated steel electrical fastener suited to that use. Where a listed bonding means is specified on a drawing, follow the fitting manufacturer's hardware call-out.
