Metallics JBWSS12HD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What bolt size do the Metallics JBWSS12HD Belleville washers fit?
The JBWSS12HD is a 1/2 inch heavy duty Belleville washer, so it goes over 1/2 inch bolts, rods, or studs. It ships as a jar of 100 under part number JBWSS12HD.
2) Are these Belleville washers stainless steel, and can I use them outdoors or in a damp vault?
Stainless steel is the material on the JBWSS12HD, which is why electricians reach for it on exterior gear, wet locations, and corrosive environments where a plated carbon steel washer would rust out. Pair it with stainless hardware to avoid mixing dissimilar metals.
3) What does a Belleville washer actually do on an electrical connection?
A Belleville is a conical spring washer. Torqued down, it flattens and keeps steady spring pressure on the joint, so a bolted electrical connection stays tight through heat cycling and vibration instead of loosening and building resistance. That is why the 1/2 inch heavy duty stainless version is a standard item on busbar, lug, and grounding connections rather than a flat washer.
4) Should I use a heavy duty Belleville or a standard flat washer for a 1/2 inch busbar bolt?
Use the flat washer only where you need load spread on a soft surface. For a 1/2 inch bolted power connection that heats and cools, the heavy duty Belleville is the right call because it holds bolt tension as the joint relaxes. The heavy duty designation on the JBWSS12HD means a thicker, higher-load disc than a standard Belleville of the same bolt size.
5) Which way does the Belleville washer face when I install it?
Crown up, against the nut or bolt head, with the flat rim bearing on the connection surface. Run the nut down until the washer is flattened to the manufacturer's torque spec for the 1/2 inch bolt; over-torquing past flat kills the spring action that the washer is there to provide.
6) How many Metallics 1/2 inch stainless Bellevilles come in a jar, and what does the jar weigh?
One hundred washers per jar, and the packaged weight is listed at 1 lb. That makes it a sensible shelf item for a service truck or an MRO crib rather than a one-off purchase.
