USS is the wider, slightly thicker pattern. The JWW82G runs up to 1.030 inches outside diameter at 0.064 to 0.104 inch thickness, which spreads bolt load over a larger bearing area, the reason USS washers are specified to improve stress distribution. SAE washers in the same 3/8 size have a smaller outside diameter, so pick SAE when the washer has to sit inside a tight counterbore or against a narrow flange, and USS when you are clamping sheet metal, strut, wood or anything that could pull through.
