Topaz Lighting 1313 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Topaz 1313 blank cover fit an FS box, or is it only for FD boxes?
The Topaz 1313 blank cover is made for single-gang FS type boxes. FS and FD boxes share the same cover footprint, so the cover mates to the box lip the same way; what differs between FS and FD is box depth, not the cover opening. If your opening is a two-gang FSS/FDS box, this single-gang plate will not close it.
2) Can this PVC blank cover be used outdoors in a wet location?
Yes. The Schedule 40 PVC blank cover is built for weatherproof service, closing the FS box against moisture and outdoor exposure, and it is cULus approved. For the closure to actually hold out water, the cover gasket and all unused hub openings on the box have to be sealed as well.
3) Is a PVC blank cover the right choice, or should I use a metal one on an FS box?
Go PVC when the box itself is PVC or when the environment is corrosive. PVC resists acids and harsh chemicals, which is where die-cast or steel covers pit and rust, and it keeps the closure non-conductive. A metal cover is the better match if you are closing a cast metal FS box in a system that relies on metallic bonding continuity through the enclosure. The Topaz 1313 is the PVC option, in Schedule 40 material.
4) I need to close off an unused device opening on an outdoor box. Is this what I want?
That is exactly the use. A blank cover gives a smooth, sealed closure on a single-gang FS box where no switch or receptacle is installed, so you can leave a junction or pull point in place without a device. If you later need a device there, you swap to a device cover rather than modifying this plate.
5) Is the Topaz 1313 cover approved for code-compliant commercial work?
Yes, the 1313 PVC blank cover is cULus approved, which is the North American listing inspectors look for on an enclosure closure in commercial and industrial installations.
6) What part number should I order for a Topaz single-gang PVC blank FS cover?
Order Topaz Lighting model 1313. It is offered in the single-gang size only, so there is no size or finish choice to specify.
7) Does a PVC blank cover come with mounting screws?
Screws are not itemized for the 1313 blank cover, so plan on using the cover screws that came with the FS box or ordering cover screws separately. Also budget for the sealing gasket if your box does not already have one, since the weatherproof closure depends on it.
